Thanks again for taking the time to continue looking into this, it really is appreciated.

Good :) Now, we'll run SFC again. If the same error comes up, we'll only have to adjust one Registry value, and that should be it.

System File Checker (SFC)

  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't have the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Alright, and now we're left with a classic corruption for the update you're trying to install. Here goes.

Alright, please run SFC again and provide me the CBS.log after.

Awesome :) Before moving on, let's see if DISM have anything to report.

  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);

  • Let the scan run until the end (100%). Depending on your system, it can take some time;
  • Copy the C:\Windows\Logs\DISM folder and C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log file on your Desktop, then right-click on it, go to Send to... and select Compressed .zip archive;
  • Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the DISM scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Hi Aura,

I've run the DISM operation and it reported out "The restore operation completed successfully. The component store corruption was repaired. The operation completed successfully.".

The DISM folder and cbs.log have been zipped together and can be found here:

DISM.zip - Google Drive

Awesome! Now we can start working on the main issue. Are you able to start the BITS service?

Hi Aura,

I issued a net start bits command, but this has failed with the following:

"The Background Intelligent Service service is starting.
The Background Intelligent Service service could not be started.

A service specific error occurred: 2147942402.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3547."

Not sure if it helps, but I've extracted what I believe to be the pertinent records from the System log in Event Viewer and these can be seen here:

EventViewer.evtx - Google Drive

Hi Aura,

I've followed the instructions above and on restart I notice that the BITS service has successfully started .......

Are there any other checks I need to perform before considering running Windows Update (automatic updates are currently switched off)? If I do choose to give it a go, do I run the risk of creating the same problem once again on Windows 8.1, and would it be better to consider biting the bullet and attempting to upgrade to Windows 10 straight away?

Personally, I would be ready to attempt to install the Windows Updates again. Do you want to upgrade to Windows 10, or not?

Hi Aura,

It took a little while (but not quite the three days since the last post to the thread) as there was approaching a year's worth of updates, but from what I can see that's finished successfully. Thanks ever so much for your help and perseverance with this issue.

Is Windows 10 all it's cracked up to be? I've heard it said it's the best bits of Windows 7 and 8 combined but how true that is I don't know. Are you suggesting I'm better off on Windows 8.1 rather than upgrading to Windows 10?

Personally, I think you would be better under Windows 10 than Windows 8.1, because it's a more modern OS, and therefore more secure and have more features. Though staying under Windows 8.1 is also perfectly fine, it's just a matter of opinion I guess. I run Windows 10 on my desktop, laptop and work laptop, and I have no problem with them whatsoever :)

Hi Aura,

Ha ha, you may (or may not) wonder why I haven't been in touch for a few days, the reason being that the Windows 10 upgrade rendered my laptop unusable (BSOD). Traced this down to AVG but as I had no Windows O/S I couldn't work out how to uninstall it. Tried renaming the offending drivers to no avail, however after copying them from another laptop that had AVG installed (and already running on Windows 10) it allowed Windows to start up once again. Still on 8.1 of course, the error being reported on the Windows 10 upgrade is C1900101-4000D; just wondering if I need to uninstall AVG before trying to run this again?
