Hi Brian

Just downloaded that update, tried installing it and it says that it is already installed.

Cheers Andy

Good. Go to Windows Updates and check for updates again. Let me know a the KB numbers of updates that are showing that need installed.

Hi Brian,

I have cut and pasted the *important* updates list as opposed to the optional ones as well.

There are more than before as new ones are now listed since this morning.

Hope its not too messy

Andy

Hi Brian,

I tried to update the KB as requested and it failed.

When trying to get cbs.log, i was denied access and had to reboot, and in doing so it again tried to install a load of updates so cbs.log will have a lot more entries than just the ones for the KB you asked.

If you want me to run it again , I will do and crash out after the update so you just get the log info for the one update.

I have attached cbs.zip.

Regards

Andy

Thanks for the info. Is your ultimate goal here to upgrade to the free Windows 10? Doing this may fix your issue if your machine supports it.

Also, do you have your Windows 7 CD/DVD?

Hi Brian,

Apologies for the delay...been away working.

This Acer One D255 is an Atom chipset running windows 7 starter... i don't think it will go to windows 10... but I wasn't intending to take it to Win 10 as it belongs to a friend and going from XP to Vista was enough of a trauma for them and I don't have the time to handhold them through it all at the moment.

I was just going to stick an extra 1gb of memory in it for them as they said it was running slow...then I noticed the WSUS errors....arrrrggh..maybe I should have looked the other way!

I have a copy of Windows 7 on USB stick but it is not SP1 and the notebook is SP1. Wold that cause a problem?

Cheers again

Andy

Is it Windows 7 x86 or x64? Is it the same version as the computer (Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, etc.)?

OK, then what we can do is the following. I would always make sure critical data is backed up. Although it's extremely rare for a data loss occurrence, it's possible.

1. Uninstall SP1 from the computer. Details at the link below.
How to uninstall Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

2. Plug in your USB drive with Windows 7 (don't boot to it) and do a Repair install (aka In-Place Upgrade). Info at the link below. All data and programs will be retained.
https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...-upgrade-install-windows-windows-7-vista.html

3. Then we would re-install all updates (which would include SP1).

Let me know if you are open to this.

Hi Brian,

I have just tried uninstalling SP1, but it failed.

Unfortunately I dont have a copy of Win7SP1 only vanilla Win7.

I will check the laptop to see if I can make recovery disks from it, but other than that I'm stumped.

Cheers

Andy

Hi Brian,

I have tried to install the update as above and it failed.

I have posted a copy of the cbs log file here.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/35073556/CBS - Copy (4).zip

As we were going to rebuild, I tried the following before trying to do the insitu upgrade to Windows 7 again

fsutil resource setautoreset true %systemdrive%\

attrib -r -s -h %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*

attrib -r -s -h %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.tm*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.blf
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.regtrans-ms

and also renamed the softwaredistribution and catroot2 folders, and re-registered a whole host of dll's to do with windows update...just on the off chance!

Hope this hasn't screwed anything up, but if so, on my head be it!

I thought I downloaded a copy of Win7SP1 from Digital River but I cant remember the file name ... something X31231.exe..

I shall have a look and see if I can find it

Cheers for still having a go.

Regards

Andy

In the meantime I do see an error I'd like to try and fix. Can you send me an updated copy of your COMPONENTS hive?

Code:
2016-01-28 10:55:45, Error CSI 00000032@2016/1/28:10:55:45.947 (F) d:\win7sp1_gdr\base\wcp\componentstore\storelayout.cpp(11690): Store corruption detected in function ComponentStore::CRawStoreLayout::CheckFamilyIndexForDeadWinnerComponent expression: (null)

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Hi Brian,

I have posted link to the components zip file here

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/35073556/COMPONENTS - Copy.zip

I have found copy of Digital River Win7 SP1 ISO and edited Ei.cfg and cversion.ini using the utils from the winisoutils tools and the lappy seems to be happy running setup.exe from within windows and is sat waiting for me to choose to go online to get important updates , or do not get inportant updates- but the installation may fail!!

If you want me to continue... let me know or shall we have another go at fixing this installation.

I am hoping the next question from the laptop would be for which version am I uprgrading ie Windows Starter.

I am also assuming that going online and downloading updates may fail...not sure if it is going to do it before or after the update.

I have a readable Win7 Starter Product Key underneath the laptop so may have to re-register with Microsoft if we go down the "upgrade" path.

Anyway... I'm a bit further on and await your advice.

Cheers,

Andy
