[SOLVED] Windows Update - Cant install IE10 (KB2786081 fails to install)

Its was definitely version 9. But see below . .

The link also suggests (in comments below) that KB2670838 is necessary.
KB2670838 was not 'found' when I search installed updates so I downloaded the KB2670838 updated and tried to install it. Took a while but it eventually installed . . . .

And then IE10 installed as well!

And now I am going for the big one - IE11. I'll check via Windows updates just in case the previous success has added anything else that needs to be done. So that produced 9 updates (IE11 was not one of them)

YUP and IE11 now installs. Only 4 days of my life down the pan - thank you MS!
And thanks for all your help.

PLEASE NOTE: I still need to get MSCONFIG fixed. Something broke when I tried to go back to a normla boot (after the clean boot). It is now not possible to set MSCONFIG to a normal boot

Great that the issue with IE is fixed.

PLEASE NOTE: I still need to get MSCONFIG fixed. Something broke when I tried to go back to a normla boot (after the clean boot). It is now not possible to set MSCONFIG to a normal boot
Please paste a screenshot of MSCONFIG into your next reply showing the boot options.

The option "Normal startup" will be unselected automatically when one or more "Startup items" are unchecked.
Yes, you may remove "DriverFinder". If you need help with this please ask.

Sadly as mentioned previously, it is not possible to tick the last two entries in startup. When ticked, clicking OK results in them becoming unticked
In both cases the registry key references is the same HKCU\Software\Wow642node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
but this key does not exist in the registry!
The only key under HKCU\Software\Wow642node\Microsoft\ is Active setup\Installed Components
Confused!

Have a look at the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg
Note: Changing the registry is not recommended if you don't know how the registry works. Modifying the registry is also at your own risk. Create a backup first.
If you need help just ask.

OK so that worked. Thanks
Why does MSCONFIG report an incorrect registry key?

So I set MSCOnfig to normal start
Click OK and it crashes with a message "System Transfiguration Utility has stopped working"

Last time this happened the PC would not boot and I had to do a repair install.
So I've closed the utility. Restarted it to find selective startup is still the option of choice
Nothing else has changed so lets try a reboot . . . .

Total Disaster. PC would not boot
Some message about "failed to read boot configuration data"
I booted from my USB stick and tried a start up repair but that failed ("Failed to save start up options")

The next reboot failed to recognise the USB ports so I could not boot from my USB Windows stick nor could I boot from my USB DVD drive
I had to remove the second HDD and replace it with the DVD drive.
Then I could get it to boot from the DVD

Then it told me it was the wrong version of windows
So I fiddled around a bit and had another go and this time it seemed to work - at least the PC booted OK!

MSCONFIG still shows selective start up but I will not save again until I am back home with better recovery options available!

So, please what is going on here and how do I get MSCONFIG to work properly?

Why does MSCONFIG report an incorrect registry key?
It doesn't. The key displayed is just the startup location of the item.

Did you have this MSCONFIG issue before you performed the repair install mentioned at the beginning of this thread ?

FRST Scan:
  1. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  2. Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  3. Press the Scan button.
  4. Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  5. Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.

You have a few so called 'system optimizers' installed. I don't recommended that. They often promise more than they deliver.
It seems that you use cracks to use some programs not legitimate. That's not recommended also, especially for security programs.

Uninstall the following programs first:

AVG PC TuneUp
DriverDR 6.5.0
System Mechanic

Let me know if this went successful or not.

Thanks for your efforts - Personally I can see no link between various bits of software and a problem with the Boot Configuration. And its tedious getting the PC up and running again.

So I left it doing a chkdsk with all the options while I was out this afternoon and that seems to have fixed the problem - MSCONFIG now stays at normal boot and the PC reboots happily

And you are right, there is a whole bunch of stuff I should uninstall 'cos it doesn't get used. Just too lazy. Maybe now is a good time before taking an image in case of future complications

If there is a way of marking this SOLVED please do so.

Okay then. I will mark this thread as solved.
