[SOLVED] Windows Update error 80070bc9 now become infinite Update restart loop

Close regedit, reboot, cross your fingers and hope Windows Update works! It's the only error that I can see in your logs, so hopefully this should be the last part of the fix! If it does continue to fail, can you upload your CBS log again please?

No dice :-( Fixed registry key access but same symptoms. (Double-checked the key again afterwards, and persisted for a couple of reboots in case Windows needed to 'catch up' with things.) Newer CBS logs attached. Seem to be a lot of 0x5 errors. Thanks for your ongoing persistence; my resolve is starting to crack and fingers are reaching for that Win 7 install DVD ;-)

Ahhh :banghead: I really thought we had it then! Before we bite the bullet and reinstall, let's go for a broader approach to these permissions:

Modify Registry Permissions

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  3. In the left hand panel of regedit, you will see a list of registry keys. Navigate to the following key, right-click on it and select Permissions...:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing

  4. Click Advanced.
  5. Under the Owner tab, click Edit.
  6. Click "Other Users and Groups".
  7. Click Advanced.
  8. Click "Find Now".
  9. Scroll down and double click on Everyone.
  10. Click OK.
  11. Put the check in "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects", click Apply then change to the Permissions tab.
  12. Under type Deny, single click on any entries and click Remove. (N.B.: There may not be any Deny entries, in which case just ignore this step. Just remove any that do exist)
  13. Click Edit (now on the standard file Property window under the Security tab).
  14. Click Add.
  15. Click Advanced.
  16. Click "Find Now".
  17. Scroll down and double click on TrustedInstaller.
  18. Click OK.
  19. Single click on TrustedInstaller and then tick the "Full Control" box under Allow.
  20. Click OK TWO times.

Tom,

Many thanks for your valiant efforts but I've given up and reinstalled Windows. (Actually quite painless for me since I've got decent backups and have local copies of all the bits I need. I'm typing this now on the rebuilt OS.)

Your last set of instructions didn't work for me. Trying to replace the owner globally gave me an error (despite running in Adminstrator mode), and TrustedInstaller didn't exist as a user in the list :-(

I assume that, since we were fixing the symptoms without necessarily understanding exactly how Windows Update got in this state, there was always a chance (esp. by resorting to such global CBS reg changes) that we'd leave things in a slightly inconsistent state (e.g. with missed updates).

Anyway, many thanks again, and I learnt a few things in the process. I'll change the post title to indicate [CLOSED] (rather than [FIXED]); feel free to change it yourself if you prefer another convention.

If you ever need any help with your maths (or any programming/software design stuff, esp. if it's Java or Python-based), just email/PM me since I owe you one. (Though my maths is *very* old and rusty since my maths degree is from 1995!)

Ah, OK, I can't edit the title myself so have just marked it solved using the thread tools. If you want to change it to better reflect its outcome, feel free.
