Windows update error

Hello,

I have some bad news the COMPONENTS hive is missing a couple of thousand keys! Do you have any recent restore points? Do you use any registry backup programs?

Oh Dear!! No, I don't have any recent restore points or registry back up programs. I have a few questions if you don't mind:
  • How will this affect my laptop running? e.g could I just ignore this problem
  • Will I need to do a system restore?
  • If so how exactly do I restore and will I need a disk to reinstall Windows?

sadie, the most likely least stress way out of your situation is going to be a repair install. It is a bit scary looking but easy to do, and definitely much less effort than a reinstall. The only downside is you will be downloading all the windows updates since your dvd release, but at least most if not all your existing software will continue to function just fine. If you use a guide like this it has links to the sp1 download. Assuming you are on Win 7 as you don't say - but Google will soon show you links if a different version.

Hey Vince, Thanks for the reply :smile9:. I was actually looking at that page earlier! If I need to go that route I will have to find the disc first..which I am not looking forward to!! Wondering now whether it was CCleaner that caused this problem and someone else mentioned Spybot flagging problems, that ended in the person deleting important registry keys. I have both of those programs installed and use them regularly. I will def have to be more careful from now on. To do the repair install I still have to back up all my data to be safe, right?

Scratch that..I found it in the first place I looked :smile9:!! Yep it is Windows 7, Home premium, SP1, 64 bit. Will wait for a response from Go To The Power before doing anything. Thanks again @VinceS.

  • Windows updates wont work until something has been fixed.
  • We might be able to extract the hive from and old system restore and get you going again
  • If all fails we will need to do a fresh install of windows, a repair install sometimes works here, but the majority of the time a fresh install is required.

Click on the start button -> Inside the search field type in Powershell -> Right click on Powershell.exe -> Choose run as admin -> enter in the following command:
Get-ComputerRestorePoint >1
Notepad 1

Hey, I tried this, nothing happening other than plain notepad appearing. So it is accepting the commands but I take it that means there are no restore points available? Should my computer create it's own restore points or is this something I would need to do manually? Because every now and then I get a prompt to back up my computer..feeling quite silly now because I choose abort Everytime...if I would have backed up my computer would it have created a restore point?

Oh by the way..all of the Windows Updates have now installed successfully (don't quite know what happened, but yeh seems ok for now)..although Itunes still not working and can't install java updates.

It is something which is normally done when a new program/Windows update are installed, but ti is something which you can do your self.

I have no idea how those updates installed, normally when this many registry keys are missing it will fail straight away, that being said, they may work now but one day soon they will stop working from these missing registry keys.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I know, seemed kinda odd after all of that for them to just start working. Still an issue though, I can't sync my ipods so I need to try and fix it really. Would you recommend I try the repair install first or just skip to full restore? Also do you think CCleaner could have caused this?

If it was me I would jump straight to the full reinstall :) Only thing is if you do the repair install it fails, you have to go over everything again to do the full reinstall.

Do you use the registry cleaner from CCleaner?

Okey doke...can't do anything at the moment, passport and ps3 both at maximum capacity..ps4 should be arriving later this week, so I will have enough space to back up all my stuff. I will do the full restore then. Before I do it can I ask, because there are so many keys missing, is there a chance that after I have done the reinstall my laptop might not start or anything extra I should be doing before attempting this? Sorry I am a bit of a control freak and this is unknown territory for me! :)

CCleaner: Not that I am aware of, I use the "cleaner" ..not the "registry" option (below in the selection pane), but since you asked I did have a look in the registry section and all the boxes were ticked, I have now unticked them. If I selected "run cleaner" would it have automatically completed the boxes ticked in the "registry" section too? Hope you understand what I am trying to say?! :)

The good thing about the COMPONENTS hive is it is not boot critical, if the hive is missing the computer will still work as per normal. There is nothing that needs to be done before reformatting, precedes backing up your data :)

CCleaner should only run the registry cleaner if you select registry.
