Windows update fail (Error:0x800703f1)

Hi

Please do the following.

step1 - SFCFix Script

Warning:
this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  1. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  2. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  3. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  4. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  5. SFCFix will now process the script.
  6. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  7. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put </> tags around the log to break up the text.

Step2 - Load COMPONENTS hive manually

Right Click on Start and select Run.
Type in regedit and hit OK.
When the registry opens click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE so it is highlighted.
Click on File > Load Hive.
Browse to system32\config and select COMPONENTS.
Click Open.
Name the Key COMPONENTS
This should now appear in the registry.

Step#3 - Remove update with DISM

Warning:
this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
    Dism /Online /Remove-Package /PackageName: package_for_KB4521863~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~18362.411.1.3
  3. Once the process has completed please reboot the machine.

Hi bruce1270

I notice on my control panel a couple of recently installed updates.
Update KB4586878 was installed May 10.
Security update KB4586863 was installed today (July 8). This same update was removed back in post 76. should it be uninstalled again?
I doesn't give me that option from control panel.

The operation was successful, although I had to attempt the Dism command twice.
I have attached the SFCFix text file and a screenshot of the command prompt window.
I also attached an image of all updates remaining in my control panel.

Step2-Install Update with DISM
  1. Download this update and save to your desktop. The file name will be Windows10.0-KB4508433-x64.cab.zip.
  2. Right-click on this file and select Extract All... Click the Extract button. You can close the folder window that opens
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator. Go ahead and allow if you receive the UAC prompt.
  5. Copy and paste the following command into the command prompt window and press enter.

    dism /online /add-package /packagepath:%userprofile%\desktop\Windows10.0-KB4508433-x64.cab
  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
    Restart Windows to complete this operation. <---You may not get this line.
    Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)? <---You may not get this line.

Update failed with message 'There were problems installing some updates, but we'll try again later. Error:0x80073701

Please do the following.

FRST Registry Search
1. Click your Start button and type in cmd.
2.After you find the Command Prompt, right click on it and select Run as Administrator.
3. Copy and paste the following into the Command Prompt:

reg load HKLM\COMPONENTS C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\COMPONENTS

4. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
5. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
6. Copy and paste KB4586878 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
7. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please attach this to your next reply. It is saved on your desktop named SearchReg.txt.

The Dism command failed, so I didn't continue after step #3. I have attached a screenshot.
Please let me know if I should continue with the Farbar Recovery scan.

ok, load the components hive manually and then continue with the FRST registry search.
