[SOLVED] Windows Update failures

Downloaded and installed the update manually (Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64.msu)
The results are as follows:

History
Security Update for Windows (KB3071756) Successful
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Sysyems (KB3071756) Failed
Hotfix for Windows (KB947821) Successful

Installed Updates
Security Update for Windows (KB3071756) 25/08/2015

[ I noted the different descriptions between the update KB3071756 as offered by auto update and manual update ]

For better or worse I then went on and dealt with further updates which were shown as available which I list below -

KB2965788 10/06/2014 important
KB2984976 14/10/2014 important
KB3020388 13/01/2015 important
KB3069762 14/07/2015 important
KB3071756 11/08/2015 important
KB3075226 11/08/2015 important
KB2923545 25/02/2014 recommended
KB2310138 for MSE (Definition 1.205.415.0) 24/08/2015 optional

The results of this were as follows: (perhaps confused by the KB3071756 situation as 1+5 = 6 and there are 7+1 shown above)

Succeeded 1 update
Failed 5 updates
Error(s) Code 80070308

But eventually it seemed to settle on the following all for date 25/08/2015
History

KB2310138 for MSE (Definition 1.205.415.0) Success
KB3075226 Fail
KB3069762 Fail
KB2965788 Fail
KB2923545 Fail
KB3020388 Fail
KB2984976 Success

Installed Updates
just added
KB2984976

So I guess I'll just upload cbs.log and windowsupdate.log for you in any case.

So CBS link
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8h1T8TzYl4xV3Y1M2kxSk1XdVU/view?usp=sharing
and WindowsUpdate link
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8h1T8TzYl4xY2MydDJUZWloelU/view?usp=sharing

Oh Boy!

To sum it up, these are the updates that failed and that we need to install?

KB3071756 Fail
KB3075226 Fail
KB3069762 Fail
KB2965788 Fail
KB2923545 Fail
KB3020388 Fail

Also, was the error code you're getting 0x80070308?

Yes that was the error code - 80070308

But after another restart, when I compare the list of failures (that you listed from what I gave you), I now have
(following the list you posted) :-

KB3071756 Fail - well not exactly 'cos as I said
Security Update for Windows (KB3071756) Successful
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Sysyems (KB3071756) Failed
and KB3071756) is no longer offered as an update because in Installed Updates
Security Update for Windows (KB3071756) is shown as installed
but not Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Sysyems (KB3071756)

KB3075226 Fail - still shown as Fail and offered as an update
KB3069762 Fail - but now shown as Successful and in Installed Updates
KB2965788 Fail - seems not to be shown any more, i.e. not offered as an update and not shown in Installed Updates
KB2923545 Fail - but now shown as Successful and in Installed Updates
KB3020388 Fail - but now shown as Successful and in Installed Updates

So I would think that the only ones we need to deal with are KB3075226 and KB2965788

Hmmm? Oh well ...

Then let's try to install the KB3075226 manually and see how it goes.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=48297

But before installing it, let's get rid of that big CBS.log so it can be recreated.
  • Enter cmd in the Start Menu, then right-click on the cmd icon and select Run as Administrator;
  • In the command prompt, enter the following command:
    Code:
    del C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log /f /q
  • If it says that the file is in use, restart your computer and try again;
Once done, try to install the update linked above. If it fails, upload the WindowsUpdate.log and CBS.log files for me to review please.

All worked sweetly.
KB3075226 now shown in Installed Updates (and in History). So no need for the WindowsUpdate.log and CBS.log files yet.

Windows Update Standalone Installer message is:

The update is not applicable to your computer

It's an update for Remote Desktop so it might be normal. Now, if you go in the Windows Update panel and click on Check for updates, is there any that are found?

Wow! No important updates available. [There are 2 optional which I don't need/want]
So maybe this is it.

Looks like it :) Was there anything else that you need, or that was it? :)

Well hopefully that's it all nailed down.
You've made a 76 year old man very happy ;-)
and you're only a Junior Analyst ;-?
BTW the Turn Windows Features On and Off window had been coming up blank
but that was fixed also after your rebuilding of Manifests and Packages I imagine.
Seriously cool.

Well, I'm still not skilled enough to be a full fledged Windows Update Analyst. I still depend on my teachers a lot depending on the situations I come across :P There's a lot of errors, issues I've never faced before so I need their guidance.

And that's good to know :) I'll be marking this thread as solved!
