Windows update going around in circles - telling me I must restart my computer

I'm really sorry again about that.

Please delete the value called ExecutionState. However, I didn't think that this value is enough on its own to cause your problem. I think there is still something else. I shall have to keep thinking :(

Thank you.

Richard

EDIT: First, you will need to right click on COMPONENTS > Permissions... > put a check in Full Control: Allow for Users group > OK.

Then please undo at the end.

Hi Richard,
That definitely did something!!

After deleting the value, I then run check for updates and it came back stating there were 22 important updates and 7 others. I got really excited and told it to install. It started the downloads and started the installs but then said 1 installed successful and 21 failed. I retried but all 21 failed again

I then just selected 1 update on it's own and it failed.

I rebooted and tried again, but each one I selected failed.

I checked the update history and every one that failed seemed to fail with the same error code 80071A91

The common answer to this seemed to be to do a reset "fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\" I did this but no difference.
I then run microsoft fixit, but still same problem - all updates failed reporting 80071A91

Today, I also had notification of a Java update (icon in taskbar) but this failed when trying to install. I also had a notification of an itunes update - this also failed.

Do you think any of these are related? At least my computer now recognises other updates to install and does not just ask to reboot when I check for updates

Hopefully we are getting closer?
Many thanks for all your help
Paul.

fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\

That's definitely progress! I am also quite interested - I didn't know that that value on its own could cause that problem. I was under the impression it had to be coupled with one of several other values... Anyway, we learn something new every day :)

Also, good research on the fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\! You were absolutely right that it is a standard fix. Unfortunately, it doesn't fix this problem the majority of the time, it is just such an easy thing which occasionally does, so I like to try it first: it would be embarrasing to overlook the easy solutions!

So, first, please start an Elevated Command Prompt: How to start an Elevated Command Prompt in Windows 7 and Vista

and copy and paste in the following:

attrib -r -s -h %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*

attrib -r -s -h %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.tm*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.blf
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.regtrans-ms

Don't worry if any fail with "Could not find...{x}", that would be normal.

Then, I wish you to download and run the System Update Readiness Tool: What is the System Update Readiness Tool?
Save it to a convenient location so we can run it again later if needs be: save you another download :)
Then please upload another copy of C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder.

Thank you!

Richard

Hi Richard,
Followed your instructions and have attached latest CBS zip file.

Thanks again for all your help with this.

Paul.

Hello again :)

This one is tricky. Can you please go Start > search for services.msc > enter.

Scroll down to Windows Modules Installer, double click on it, and set the startup type to Automatic > OK, then restart your computer.

This service is quite strange in that it has a variable startup type (basically, manual most of the time, except for when its needed next boot, when its automatic, so by setting it to automatic, we force any pended events to occur over the next boot)

Thanks!

Richard

Hi Richard,
Changed the setting as requested and rebooted PC.
Run check for updates and it stated there are 22 important updates.
Clicked to install - it started then come up with a message that all failed.
I checked the "update history" and basically all updates seem to fail every day.
So I rebooted my PC again and it stated the same 2 updates to install and appeared to install them but obviously did not.

Started up PC and went through whole update cycle, but same results again - it say it is downloading and installing but just fails.

Actually restarted PC another two times - exactly the same.

I really do not understand what is going on here.

Thanks
Paul.

I have had the same problem since 23 September the same problem and am hoping one of you can help me. Update will not complete for KB2872339. I have tried many solutions and so far none have worked. I followed the recommendations of post #11 in this thread with no success. Please let me know if anyone can work with me and how we can proceed. Thanks!
