[SOLVED] Windows update not working - can't update important files

Hello again Rob :)

I have been playing around with this problem quite a bit. It is not one I knew an awful lot about, to be honest.

But I have some fresh ideas now :)

Please start an Elevated Command Prompt: How to start an Elevated Command Prompt in Windows 7 and Vista

and copy and paste in the following:

fsutil resource setautoreset true %SystemDrive%\

attrib -r -s -h %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\Config\TxR\*

attrib -r -s -h %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.tm*
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.blf
del %SystemRoot%\System32\SMI\Store\Machine\*.regtrans-ms

which will reset the Transactional Logfiles. I now think this is the likeliest cause.

TypeYand press enter if you are asked "Are you sure" to any line.

Once it has completely, please right click in the Command Prompt, select Select All, and then right click again. Nothing will appear to happen, but it will have copied to the clipboard. Please paste the output here.

If that doesn't do it, please upload C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ReportingEvents.log

Thank you!

Richard

Hi Bob,

Just stepping in quickly whilst Richard is offline to speed things up a little. It looks like you didn't start an elevated command prompt, perhaps you missed that step? Would you mind trying again please:

Hello to you both, and welcome to Sysnative!

Since this thread is now getting quite crowded, can you please both start a new thread in the Windows Update forum, and I will help you there.

Your system is in a slightly precarious state, there are things we need to do in exactly the correct order. Please do not follow any further instructions (may already be too late!) without my explicit go-ahead, and especially, do not delete/remove/rename your pending.xml file.

Please help. I'm having the same issue as BeeDamned and I really would like some help.

These errors are actually entirely normal, and are not a problem in themselves. Please follow these instructions: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-update/4736-windows-update-forum-posting-instructions.html

in order to attach a CBS folder to your new thread.

Thank you!

Richard
