[SOLVED] Windows Update not working & now doesn't recognize MS software

Please try downloading and installing Microsoft Silverlight here: Get Silverlight | Microsoft Silverlight
Be sure to uncheck the options that change your homepage and search engine on the first page.

When the installation has completed, it should offer to enable Microsoft Update. Let me know if that works.

Control Panel says it's already installed; also listed in "Installed Updates". Done 10/16/16 Version 5.1.50901.0.
Download and attempt installation anyway? Silverlight has always been listed at Control Panel.

Uninstalled Silverlight at Control Panel. Reboot. Reinstalled Silverlight from link in post #21. Clicked on Silverlight at Start>Programs>Microsoft Silverlight. Brings up Configuration. Made no modifications; left already checked box under Updates tab, "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them".

Went to WU home page. Red caution says check for updates AND BRAVO! it also says "You receive updates: for Windows and other products from Microsoft Update".

After checking about 11 minutes, I'm now offered 4 important updates:
KB3212646 January Sec Quality Rollup; KB890830 Mal Software Tool
KB3128022 and KB3128024 Security Updates for MS Office Compatibility Pack Service Pack 3

Avail WU 1 10 17.JPG.

Also 17 optional updates
The Skype thing has reappeared.

I'm grateful and astonished. :smile9: Do I download and install the 4 important updates?

Awesome! I'm so glad that worked for you :)

Yes, please install all of the important updates. If any of them fail, zip and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log with your reply.

The 4 important updates downloaded and successfully installed.

I see KB3212646 is listed as "pending" in "view update history". Is that a concern or because it's January and just became available today?

That snip was just after restart. It took some time, but it now says successful.

I've been struggling with this Windows Update issue since October and the December downloads and installations really wrecked a poor situation...but zcomputerwiz has prevailed, and I'm most grateful. Thank you for persisting with me. I believe this thread could be marked solved, and hopefully, neither of us will return to it.

Thank you for the feedback!

If you do encounter any problems, please do post back and I'll continue to assist you.
