[SOLVED] Windows Update won't search for updates, fails with error code 80070490 [Win7 Pro SP1]

Step 1:

  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2:
Start the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
On completion, attach the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log to your next reply.

Nice. Restart the computer.
Check Windows Update again and report the result.
If it fails, attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

Wohoo!
After a restart, Windows Update auto-corrected itself and immediately started searching for updates.
It found 12 important updates and 3 optional updates.

THANK YOU! I owe you a beer. :)

Now I should be good to go to install any updates it finds, right?

Yes, select only the oldest important update and try to install that one. If it succeeds resume with the next oldest one.
If it fails, reboot the machine and try again.

Tell me the result.

Okidoki.
Unfortunately I had to reboot before I saw your message, but it seems to have succeeded in installing a majority of the updates it found on 12th of May.
I have attached a screenshot of recent updates - unfortunately it's in Danish, but "Fuldført" = "Succeeded" and "Mislykkedes" = "Failed". And "Anbefalet" = "Recommended" and "Vigtig" = "Important".

So, only the latest Security Essentials-update seems to be acting up. I will do a reboot and see if it corrects itself.

After reboot, it doesn't try to install the Essentials-update, but it also doesn't give any errors.
Other than that everything seems to be running smoothly.

You may wait but there should be newer updates: Microsoft Update Catalog
Open Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) and check manually for updates.

Done. Manually updated and MSE is now back on track. (y)

Well, I guess that's it then?

If so - then I'd again just like to thank you very much for all your help!
Greatly appreciated! (y)(y)(y)

Great. I will mark this thread as solved.

Take care.
