Check Disk (chkdsk)
Follow the instructions below to run a CHKDSK scan on your Windows partition;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command chkdsk /f (there's a space between "chkdsk" and "/f") and press on Enter;
  • A message will be returned, stating that the drive cannot be locked because it's already in use, and you'll be asked if you want to schedule the scan for the next restart. Enter y and press on Enter;
  • Restart your computer, and the chkdsk scan will be launched automatically;
  • Once the chkdsk scan is complete and you're back in Windows, find the log in the Event Viewer and copy/paste it in your next reply;
WARNING: Depending on your hard drive (specs, free space, fragmentation, etc.) this scan can be relatively long to complete. Give it all the time it needs to finish. Do not interrupt it for any reason there is, or you might be damaging your drive in the process and make your Windows unbootable. It's suggested to let this scan run overnight or when you leave the house for a few hours (when you go to work for example). If you are running this scan on a laptop, don't forget to leave it plugged in;

Very strange. The chkdsk scan doesn't start. Computer boots up and starts windows normally!!! Tried it many times.

I also found out now that I can't open event viewer. When I try, a message appears "microsoft management console has stopped working - windows is checking for a solution" and then disappears with nothing after that...

Maybe I should free your time and do a fresh install of windows if it's such a mess?

You're not taking any of my time don't worry :) If I didn't want to assist you, I wouldn't have posted in your thread. It's my pleasure to be of assistance. Can you try to boot in Safe Mode and enter the chkdsk /f command there?

Done safe mode booting and clean boot. Nothing worked. But I improvised a little and run chkdsk through repair option (F8). It asked me to dismount the volume first and then it started.

It completed verifying files (stage 1 of 3) after:
-deleting corrupt attribute record (160, $130) from file record segment 113026
-deleted corrupt attribute list entry with type code 160 in file 133026
-deleting corrupt attribute record (160, $130) from file record segment 1659
-deleting corrupt attribute record (160, $130) from file record segment 134968

It's stuck forever in verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3) 25% complete, "correcting error in index $130 for file 3696".

I will leave it open until you tell me something else...

I would leave it overnight. A chkdsk scan can be very lenghty depending on the current state of the drive, and stopping it abruptly can damage its state.

Came back home after a few hours and the laptop was powered off. No sign that something worked with chkdsk...

Event viewer doesn't open.
I tried again to check the disk (through repair option of course) and now it completed fixing many corruptions.
At the end of disk check it reported "failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50". (I guess that even if I was able to open event viewer we would find nothing)

I ran once more disk check after that and the scan found no problems (but there is the same fail report about the event log). Still eventviewer fails to open and disk check doesn't start the normal way...

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:
  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe;
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);

This is what I thought. Your hard drive is currently failing. There's no telling when exactly it will fail, it can be in a few years like it can be in a few days or a few minutes. Right now, I suggest you to backup all the data you want to keep on another storage media, and buy a new hard drive since you'll need to replace it.

As a last resort, I have done a bios update and changed the drive mode from ahci to ide. Now gsmartcontrol can do the test. Short self test finished normally with no errors. Extended test will probably finish in about one and a half hour and I will inform you about the result.

The data are already backed up.

Is there a possibility that something was wrong with a driver, and that's why I can do the disk test now on gsmartcontrol?
Or there is nothing else we can do to fix the problem?
You think that the hard disk is causing the problems even if the scan reports that it's working normally for an old aged disk?

and last, How many questions can i ask before you answer: "Please man, change your hard drive, do a clean install and continue with your life!" :lol:

You can ask me as many questions as you want, I'll answer them. But my answer regarding the fact you need to change your hard drive won't change if when it comeback from the test, it still shows pink/red highlighted lines on critical SMART attributes :P

Finishing with no errors doesn't mean that the hard drive is healthy, it means that GSmartControl was able to run its tests without being interrupted nor stopped :) And I doubt there was something wrong with the driver if you didn't change anything but the Hard Drive Controller Mode in the BIOS :)

No problem billarious, you're welcome :) If you ever have questions or issues when installing Windows on your new laptop, you can seek assistance in the Windows section here matching your version. If you have Windows Updates in the future, you can comeback here :)
