[SOLVED] windows will not check for updates automarically and when doing manually it seems to

kb3168965 is not applicable and all the others are already installed. For the fun of it, I will try windows update while you are looking at my specs

What did the specs tell you?

When I ran windows update, I got 52 updates being available after about 1/2 hour. I have successfully downloaded and installed all of them. I think KB3177725 was the key. It is not in the list that is in Brian Drab's post about "Windows update having very slow scan times and stuck at checking for updates" that is in the wu.kerelay.de/en/ site he refers to.

The specs showed that your system should be more than capable for Windows Update, and also what I was expecting for the disk SMART stats.
It appears that your hard drive has sectors pending to be reallocated. These errors cause long delays when writing to those areas of the disk.

Please make sure you have a complete backup of any files you value before continuing!
A drive can fail at any time and without warning. Attempting any kind of repair can cause data loss.

Download and install Seagate SeaTools for Windows here: http://www.seagate.com/files/www-co..._shared/downloads/SeaToolsforWindowsSetup.exe
Check the box next to your drive, then click Basic Tests -> Fix All -> Fix All Long
This should test and reallocate the pending sectors and will take a very long time to complete. When it does, a report will be provided indicating if the reallocation succeeded or failed.

Hi zcomputerwhiz,

Sorry for the slow reply; I have been away for a few days. I ran seatools for windows/fix, all got a fail and then ran seatools for dos and did all repairs. After repairs I ran the long and short tests to get passes, which I did. I then reran seatools for windows and got good passes.

I just ran windows update ( I have not yet changes the settings from "never check...." ) and got updates to install within a reasonable time.

What do we do next? Should I rerun speccy?

Yes, please run another Speccy snapshot. That will indicate if the sectors that were pending have been reallocated.
Since Windows Update is functioning now I expect it will show that they have.

Code:
05
Attribute name: Reallocated Sectors Count
Real value: 0
Current: 100
Worst: 100
Threshold: 36
Raw Value: 0000000000
Status: Good

C5
Attribute name: Current Pending Sector Count
Real value: 0
Current: 100
Worst: 100
Threshold: 0
Raw Value: 0000000000
Status: Good
C6
Attribute name: Uncorrectable Sector Count
Real value: 0
Current: 100
Worst: 100
Threshold: 0
Raw Value: 0000000000
Status: Good

It would appear that the drive has decided that the sectors were recoverable after all. I think you are all set :)
