[WinServer2008R2SP1] Windows Update fails/IE doesn't work/IE can't be installed

Re: Win Server 2008 R2 SP1 - Windows Update fails/IE doesn't work/IE can't be install

Server was rebooted but IE state is unchanged. When installing with DISM yesterday didn't get any errors

So I tried to install IE 11 using the installer from MS and got this error "Internet Explorer did not finish installing. Setup can't continue because a more recent version of Internet Explorer is installed on your computer"

So I checked Program and Features\View installed Updates and showing IE10 and tried to uninstall it and got this error "An error has occurred. Not all of the updates were successfully uninstalled"

Any tricks?

Thanks

Re: Win Server 2008 R2 SP1 - Windows Update fails/IE doesn't work/IE can't be install

Let's try removing Internet Explorer 11.

Remove Update with DISM

  1. Download the update here: http://download.microsoft.com/downl...70-4B59EA148EAA/IE11-Windows6.1-x64-en-us.exe
  2. Copy the file to a convenient location (such as C:\temp).
  3. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  5. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    cd C:\temp

replace C:\temp with your path if different

    IE11-Windows6.1-x64-en-us.exe /x:C:\temp\

    DISM.exe /Online /Remove-Package /PackagePath:C:\temp\IE-Win7.cab

  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)?
  7. Make sure to allow the computer to restart if prompted.

If you receive any other message:
  8. Right-click on the Command Prompt window and click Select All, this will invert all of the colors by selecting the text, now press enter. All of this text is now copied.
  9. Paste (Ctrl+V) it into your next post, then zip and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CSB.log

Tried above and got this:

C:\temp>DISM.exe /Online /Remove-Package /PackagePath:C:\temp\IE-Win7.cab

The operation completed successfully.

Wasn't prompted to reboot but did so anyway

Tested IE and unchanged

Ran IE 11 install again and got this message " Internet Explorer did not finish installing, Setup can't continue because a more recent version of Internet Explorer is installed on your computer"

Reviewed the C:\Windows\IE11_main.log (Setup exit code: 0x00009C48 (40008) - A more recent version of Internet Explorer is installed.)

Ran this from a elevated command prompt:

Any ideas where to go from here?

Similar issue here while attempting to install 64-bit IE 11, with the 32-bit version of IE 11 presently installed, on 64-bit Windows 7 Pro OS. After running the MS downloaded off-line installer (IE11-Windows6.1-x64-en-us.exe), the 32-bit IE shortcut icon is displayed in the "Start Menu" and that is exactly what you get, when in reality it should be the 64-bit version.

On one occassion, the IE "Start Menu" icon displayed as the 64-bit IE shortcut, but it started version 8 of IE. Huhh!

Over the past three days I have spent hours trying to get IE 11 64-bit to properly install and run on my machine. I have followed the steps in this thread as well as many others, including Microsoft TechNet... to no avail. One page on Microsoft's support site provided a link to verify that all updates related to IE 11 64-bit were installed. Subsequent to this step, there were no updates missing, but three returned results that the updates were not required. What gives, Microsoft?

I'm beginning to believe there is no solution to this problem. If you have found one, please post here for all to see.

I tried adding IE11-Windows6.1-KB2956283-x64.msu to C:\Windows\CheckSur\packages
Ran CheckSUR again

Looks good. Let's check the result with SFC.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please zip and attach this to your next post.

Looks like SFC doesn't find any problems.

What version does Internet Explorer show (Help -> about Internet Explorer)?

It opens but can't do that (see image in post on 02-22-2017, 10:05 AM)

When I check the EXE it's shows 10.0.9200.16720

Should I try to install IE 11?
