I had problem with update last week. I have Windows 7 prof 64-bit.
Windows was searching for update whole day without result. So I try this one and it solved my problem.
1. Turn off widows update service: click start and type cmd (command line), right click and run as administrator,
2. Manually download and install last windows updates, repair updates and rollup updates from Microsoft Update Catalog (you need use Internet Explorer) like these:
KB3138612, KB3145739, KB3153199, KB3161664, KB3020369, KB3172605 ...
3. If will be problem during instalation, chancel it and turn off update servise (1.) a try ones more
4. Restart your PC and try to seach updates
5. After 20 minutes restart PC and updates should be installed.

Sorry, I forget command for Turnoff update service.
Into the command line you must write " net stop wuauserv " and press enter

- I take this "solution" (see reply #24) with a pinch of salt (for the time being). Not that I don't trust MS or one "Aura". But I have experienced something that makes me a bit suspicious. After re-installing Win 7 SP 1 and all the "Important" Updates, I installed .NET software and it broke WU (again).
- And what if, one already has installed all those updates and WU breaks again ? I assume that Windows would refuse installing those updates with an error: "Update already installed".
- But we'll have to wait and see how this will play out.
- @Aura: Do you experience that when you install .NET software it breaks "Windows Update" ?

- Internet Explorer is no longer the only browser that's able to download updates from the "Microsoft Catalog" website (haven't tried it yet, though):

Breaks Windows Update how? It becomes slow when checking for updates again or something else?

- Then WU will run high CPU & high memory usage (again), like so many users have experienced.

- Update #1: It turns out that installing .NET v4.00 "breaks" Windows Update (i.e. back to high CPU & high memory usage). I experienced it myself as well. But some 2 weeks ago I installed .NET v4.52 and recently installed a ".NET Reliability Update". And those 2 pieces of software didn't "break" WU on my Win 7 SP 1 system.

I thought that one needed to install .NET v4.00 before one could install a higher .NET v4.xx version. But it turns out that when one installs e.g. .NET v4.52 then older/lower .NET versions v4.xx are removed/killed. That becomes apparent when one also removes .NET v4.52. Then a program like Piriform's SPECCY no longer sees a .NET version v4.52. Then the highest .NET version is reported as v3.5.

isn't useful anymore for Vista users then there's another approach that can help to fix this one particular WU problem. Microsoft issues a socalled "Security Bulletin" every 2nd tuesday of the month (=Update Tuesday) along with the new updates/patches. Such a bulletin lists the updates/patches that are issued that month. Try if (manually) downloading & installing those updates fixes this WU problem. I recommended it to member "Fafique" and it turned out to actually work (I held my fingers crossed).

offers - at least up to now - every month a new webpage with updated info on possible solutions for the nagging WU problem. But the webpages for the previous months are archived and are also still available. The archive seems to go back to March 2016. If the current webpage doesn't provide a solution then perhaps the info on the older webpages can provide a solution. The URL of every archived webpage contains a reference to the month in which the page was written. E.g.:

March 2016: Search for Windows Updates takes forever? - A possible solution (URL contains "2016-03")
April 2016: Search for Windows Updates takes forever? - A possible solution (URL contains "2016-04")
May 2016: Search for Windows Updates takes forever? - A possible solution (URL contains "2016-05")
Etc.
