[WinVistaSP2 x86] WU error 80070490

Re: Windows Update error 80070490 (Windows Vista SP2 x86)

Thanks. We have one more fix to do. If you want to do it now, let's do it. If you don't have time and need to reschedule, just let me know.

Retrieve New Software Hive

Make sure you delete any software or software.zip files on your desktop to avoid confusion.

  1. Open RegBak.
  2. Click New Backup to open the new backup window. Leave the backup path as the default.
  3. Click Click here to view details and uncheck all options except for C:\Windows\System32\config\SOFTWARE. Press OK
  4. Click Start to create a backup.
  5. Once the backup is done, click Close to return to the main RegBak screen. You have now backed up the registry. Close RegBak
  6. Navigate to the folder you saved your backup (It should be C:\Windows\RegBak\PC-NAME\DATE) Make sure this is the newest one.
  7. Inside the folder, double click Windows, System 32 and config to get to a folder with the SOFTWARE hive in:
    2014-10-1818_56_49-config_zpscbb8aad0.png
  8. Copy the SOFTWARE file to your desktop. Zip it up and send me a PM with the link.

For some reason my previous post came out as gibberish. I've edited it so it should be readable now.

Got the hive and sent you the link. Let's do this one more time.

SOFTWARE Hive Replacement with RegBak

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Close all open programs and save all your work. You will need to reboot the machine during this process.
  2. Download SOFTWARE3.zip from --> I'll PM you the link<-- to your desktop and extract the file SOFTWARE to your desktop (it has no file extension)
  3. Navigate to the folder you saved your most current backup using RegBak (It should be C:\Windows\RegBak\PC-NAME\DATE)
  4. Inside the folder, double click Windows, System 32 and config to get to a folder with the SOFTWARE hive in:
    2014-10-1818_56_49-config_zpscbb8aad0.png
  5. Copy the SOFTWARE file from your desktop (not the zip file), to that folder. When asked if you want to replace the current SOFTWARE file, choose yes.
  6. Open RegBak again. Highlight the backup in the list (it should be the only one), and press Restore. Click Start. RegBak will reboot your computer to complete the restore process.

Re: Windows Update error 80070490 (Windows Vista SP2 x86)

It seems to be working!
Searching for updates right now, think it will take a while, the computer has been like this for at least 6 months according to my friend so I'm guessing there's some catching up to do.

I can't thank you enough, I wouldn't have fixed this on my own!

Thanks again!

Re: Windows Update error 80070490 (Windows Vista SP2 x86)

No problem. Let me know if you have any other issues with it. There may still be things that need fixed if it doesn't work.

Take care.

Re: Windows Update error 80070490 (Windows Vista SP2 x86)

Brian, Hope that you are still monitoring this website. I have a Dell Inspiron 1505 PC with Vista 32 bit Home Basic. Some time ago, I reloaded the installed the WSUS Online Update. I just installed the last version for Vista which is 10.9.2. The unit now automatically finds the updates and I can install the windows definitions but when I try to install a Security Upgrade the installation fails and gives a "80070490" error.

I have prepared a zip file with the information you need that you can download from my server.

I hope that you can help me .. Thanks, Ed
