Hello,

Today I tried to install the new Cumulative Update (KB4505903) and it got to "Installing 100%" but then gave error code 0x800f0982. Retrying it gave the same thing. I then tried deleting the contents of the SoftwareDistribution folder (after stopping the Windows Update service) but that again didn't help. Next I ran dism /cleanup-image /restorehealth, which got to 100% but then gave error code 0x800f081f: "the source files could not be found". I Googled this error code and the advice was to run dism with the /startcomponentcleanup switch, which completed successfully, then I reran the original /restorehealth command and it completed successfully this time. But the update still wouldn't install, giving the same error 0x800f0982. Finally I ran SFCFix, which initially said "Stage 1 of 6 failed on server", but the rest of the stages appeared to complete fine and it said "failed to create zip file with errno 2" followed by "scan completed with warnings". After that it said "Due to the nature of your corruptions, scan times have been extended by approximately 15-20 minutes. Please be patient and allow the operation to complete", but after it was done, it actually said it had detected 0 corruptions, as is also shown in its logfile. I nevertheless retried the update one more time and still the same error 0x800f0982 was obtained.

I attach the logfile (SFCFix.txt) along with a copy of my CBS folder and my COMPONENTS hive. Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Hi!

This is a new error for me.

Did you test your hard drive for errors?

Was any RAM added/replaced in the machine recently?

Hello. This machine is less than 6 months old, and Windows is installed on an SSD, which I thought weren't prone to errors. As a check I ran CrystalDiskInfo and it said the SSD's health is "Good 100%" and the number of Media and Data Integrity Errors is 0. The HDD (on which I store documents, pictures, etc.) is also in good shape with no uncorrectable sectors, no reallocated sectors, and no pending sectors. As for RAM, I haven't done anything with that, nor any other component. Everything is stock as it came from Dell.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

Afterwards, please run DISM and attach CBS.log.

Excellent!

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Hello. SFC completed successfully and said "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations." I attach the new CBS log, though given that SFC didn't find anything, I doubt if the log shows anything.

Hello. I just tried it again and it got to "Installing 100%" but then gave error 0x800f0982, just like before.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Try updating the system just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as the it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and provide the link to the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or OneDrive or SendSpace.

Hello and good morning. The fix again ran very quickly and produced a log which I have attached, since it's fairly long. I also noticed that your fix seems to relate to Microsoft.PPIProjection, i.e. the "Connect" app, which I previously uninstalled (using this method: How to uninstall and remove Connect in Windows 10) since I have no use for it. Doing this didn't cause any problems with updates before, but are you thinking it's the root cause of my problem now?
