[SOLVED] WU error 0x800f0982, but SFCFix found no corruptions

Hello. The fixlog is attached and seems to show that the registry keys were fixed successfully. The log also says, however, that it failed to create a system restore point. After I saw this, I attempted to manually open System Restore (from Control Panel -> System -> System Protection) and got the message "There was an unexpected error in the property page: System Restore encountered an error. Please try to run System Restore again. (0x81000023) Please close the property page and try again." Running rstrui.exe also gave the message "System protection is turned off". I don't remember ever disabling System Restore, and the Volume Shadow Copy service is currently running, so I'm not sure what could be causing this. Is it something you could take a look at as well?

I will take a look after we fix updates. Please retry updates now and if they fail, please repeat the process with ProcMon and provide both CBS log and the ProcMon LogFile.PML.

Hello. The cumulative update completed successfully, and I am now on version 18362.267! So I guess now we just have to fix System Restore.

Great!

Please try the following:

  • Click Win key + S and type Services.
  • Right-click on the Services search results and select Run as Administrator.
  • Select Volume Shadow Copy Service and change its status to Start (if needed).
  • Besides, select Automatic as a Startup type.

Hello. As I mentioned in my previous post, the Volume Shadow Copy service is already running, so I didn't need to start it, but its startup type was set to Manual, so I changed that to Automatic and rebooted. After that, opening System Restore now still gives the same error as before (0x81000203. I accidentally mistyped it as '0x81000023' in post #41.)

Hello. I have never used the program "TuneUp Utilities", so that part was inapplicable to me. The Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service was set to Manual and was not running, so I started it and set its startup type to Automatic. However, even after doing this, I still got the same 0x81000203 error when opening System Restore. Finally, I checked the Group Policy entry for "Disable System Restore" and it was already set to Not Configured, so that part was also inapplicable. So in summary, none of the steps from the link you gave have solved the problem.

As I am primarily a Windows Update expert, I would recommend that you start a new thread here where people who may be more knowledgeable on the matter of System Restore than me may have some insights for you.

Windows 10

I will mark this thread as solved. :-)

Good luck.

Well, thanks very much for solving my Windows Update problem. One final question - can I just delete the FRST.exe and SFCFix.exe files, or is there some specific uninstall process I need to go through?
