[SOLVED] Turn Windows features on/off box is not populated AND Windows update issue

Hi Everyone

I needed to use Telnet yesterday to do some testing on a control system and when I opened the view box that should show all the features it was blank. I Googled a bit and apparently this is not an uncommon problem, however after following the Microsoft directions I still don't have the issue resolved. I REALLY want to avoid sending my laptop to our IT department (in New Jersey) because without it I can't do a whole lot and they would probably just wipe it and do a fresh install of Windows to save time. I have lots of installed software, some of it that was pretty difficult to install and I don't want to have to redo it. I'm not in a desperate situation but would like to get the features box to populate and the automatic updates working.

I located what looked like some good information on this website:
link removed
but when I made it to the registry portion of the directions my results didn't seem to match up with what was shown so I chickened out and decided that I should slow down and post here.

I've listed what I did below, posted the contents of my SFCFix results, and the contents of my CheckSUR.log file. I will be uploading my CBS files shortly.

Many thanks!

After each of the below steps I checked and the features on/off box was not populated:
  • Checked and found that my automatic Windows updates were not working. I manually ran the updates and 20/25 installed successfully.
  • Reran for the last 5 updates and none installed.
  • Rebooted the PC.
  • Reran the updates and none installed.
  • Ran sfc/scannow and everything showed good.
  • Located and ran Microsoft Fixit 50123 and 50202.
  • Rebooted the PC.
  • Reran the updates and none installed.
  • Ran MirosoftFixit.wu.Run
  • Rebooted the PC
  • Reran the updates and none installed.
  • Ran the Microsoft SURT tool.
  • Rebooted the PC
  • Reran the updates and 5 installed successfully. The failed one is KB2937610, a security update for the .NET framework.
  • Ran the Microsoft SURT tool.
  • Rebooted the PC.
  • Ran the updates and it did not install.
  • Somewhere in the above I confirmed that updates were set to Automatic and running

CheckSUR.log file shows 8 registry errors in the Packages section:

Hi calkin and welcome to Sysnative forums

It is lucky you did not follow that advise inside that link you provided, it was dangerous advice. I have removed the link from the post to make sure no one else follows it. The reason why this advise was bad is because if a Windows Update file is showing as corrupt it needs to be fixed, by deleting the registry key removes reference to the corrupt file. This doesn't actually solve the issue, it will make it worse in the long run. Every WU file is important and is on the system for one reason or another, by removing reference to the update via the registry will make it not show as corrupt, but what if you have a WU file that requires an update file from a previous version in order for it to work? then later down the track more windows update issue will occur as it wont be able to find the file that is required. Hopefully someone get get back to you with your issue of the corrupt/missing registry issues soon.

Alex

THANKS Go The Power!:thumbsup2:

I've had to delete some files in the past that then regenerate correctly but wasn't going to do it to my registry unless I had a much higher confidence level that the advice was correct. I'd rather be slow and right than fast and doing a re-install.

Just wondering if anyone had a chance to look at this. I dorked around with it for a while last week and made zero progress. I'm pretty lost at this point.

Hi there,

I'll see what I can do to get you fixed up. :) I'm not helping here full time at the moment due to school, but I have 2 weeks off from Monday so will be able to help out more here for a bit. If I disappear, then just bump the thread because I've probably forgotten! :p

Right, let's start by getting rid of a few errors. I'll quickly get these 4 fixed before moving on to the harder ones.

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFixScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFixScript.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Hi Tekno Venus!
Thank you for the very fast reply today. I think I'm going to have to go back to school myself to work on that read and follow directions thing because I ran the script without closing Chrome or Outlook:banghead:. I then realized my mistake, closed them and ran it again. Below I've posted the results of the first time with Chrome and Outlook open followed by the results with them closed. I hope I did the "CODE" thing right.

Thanks a TON!

Hi!
That was a FAST reply and greatly appreciated.

I ran SURT and here are the file results. These are the initial ones from 9/24 and the ones from today. I have to go watch the kids play volleyball so I won't be replying to anything for another 16 hours or so.

thanks,
john

Hi,

That only seemed to fix one error due to a bug in my script - I typed one letter wrong! Not to worry, I'll fix that it now.

I've uploaded a new SFCFixScript.txt file in the same location. Run it the same as before: Tekno's Fixes

I'd also like you to upload part of your registry to me for analysis.

Export registry as hive

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages\

  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file SideBySide (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.

I have to go watch the kids play volleyball so I won't be replying to anything for another 16 hours or so.
Not to worry :) Enjoy!

-Stephen

Hi Tekno Venus!

I just cleared away some things and was able to run the new fix. Based on the number of errors in the SURT log file things are getting better :grin1:

I exported the section of my registry to my desktop as instructed, it's about 2.3 MB.

THANK YOU!
john

PS - Both my kids teams won! Its a first for the year.

Here are the new and complete results after running the SURT tool:

Hi John,

That SURT log is looking better now! :) Could you upload the registry export for me to look at please (zip it up and attach it to your next post). I meant to ask you to do that last time, but apparently I forgot.

PS - Both my kids teams won! Its a first for the year.
Hurrah, that's fantastic! :D

Hi John,

Thanks a lot for that. A quick analysis of the hive with one of my tools shows what I expected with one of the keys.

Take a look at these two lines in the SURT log:
Code:
(f) CBS Registry Error 0x00000002 [B]Package_for_KB2835361~31bf3856ad364e35~a[/B] Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\Packages\ Failed to open store sub key
(f) CBS Registry Error 0x80070103 [B]Package_for_KB2876284_SP1~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0[/B] failed to get owner for package.
Note how the bold section in the first line seems to be cut off after the a? It should be like the other line and have md64~~6.1.1.0 at the end.

This is what is known as an embedded null. Basically a corruption has the key to be cut short. There's a more technically explanation if you want it :p. My tool (RegDelNull by Sysinternals) shows the embedded null:

Code:
D:\WUpdate\Fixes\$In Progress\Calkin>regdelnull -s HKLM\Fix

RegDelNull v1.10 - Delete Registry keys with embedded Nulls
Copyright (C) 2005-2006 Mark Russinovich
Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com

Null-embedded key (Nulls are replaced by '*'):

HKLM\FIX\Package_for_KB2835361~31bf3856ad364e35~a*************

Delete? (y/n) n

Scan complete.

It's going to take me a little while to fix this, because I'm going to need to manually repair the hive. I can also see the cause of the other 3 errors. I should be able to repair the 3 other errors with SFCFix and I'll have to repair the embedded null manually in the binary of the file.

I'll get back to you as soon as I can. If you don't hear from me in the next day or so, bump the thread to remind me. Hopefully shouldn't take that long though! :)

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

I looked and couldn't find a kowtow icon so I'll go with this one: :thumbsup2:

It's great to know there are people like you in the world!

thanks, john

Hi John,

The good news is that I've managed to repair your hive. In fact, I had repaired it within an hour of you sending it to me.

So what's taken so long? Well, this problem is actually very rare. Whilst we encounter bitshifts and embedded nulls here fairly often, they are almost always inside the COMPONENTS hive of the registry, not the SOFTWARE hive - where your corruption lies. I've never seen this before, and the other experts here don't see it often either. Why is this an issue? The COMPONENTS hive is only used by Windows Update - that's the sole purpose of the hive. The hive is only loaded when WUpdate needs it, which means we can actually delete the hive and copy the repaired one in it's place whilst Windows is loaded. Windows will boot without a COMPONENTS hive at all and although some things will break - it's possible to still use the machine. The SOFTWARE hive is always in use by Windows, and cannot be replaced so easily.

The other issue with the SOFTWARE hive is that it changes regularly. The COMPONENTS hive doesn't change that often. This means that when I repair your SOFTWARE hive, I need to do so as soon as possible and then get you to restore the fixed version in as short a space of time in order to reduce the risk of any data being lost.

I'm currently trying to work out the best way to perform that replacement as easily as possible.

I'll get back to you ASAP.

Stephen

Hi again John,

I've now worked out a way to replace your hive. However, it requires that we're both online and active at the same time. The reason for this is because the SOFTWARE hive is changed so often, we can't afford to send me the hive to repair and you to replace it two days later for example. You need to send it to me, I repair it and then you perform the replacement as fast as possible. I can repair the hive within 10 minutes of receiving it.

I'm in the UK and according to your IP address you are 6 hours behind me.

Hopefully we'll both be online tomorrow and we can get this fixed.

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

I was tied up all weekend with family and have been playing catch up here at the office today. I'll be at a customer the rest of the day today, Monday. Starting 7 a.m. my time Tuesday (1 p.m. your time) if you let me know when a good time is for you I will make sure to be online at that time, any time day or night. I will back up my documents and such tonight in case of any badness.

Is there any chance this could be related to a piece of software that I installed? I added a program that required Java, and the installation process for both Java and the new program was very difficult, multiple reboots and lots of editing of boot files from the command line.

THANKS!
john

Hi John,

I am ready to work on this - I have an hour and a bit free now.

-Stephen

Hi Stephen!
I'm here and can work on it anytime. Tell me what to do.

thanks, john
