Good day to all,

Well I knew that sooner or later I will be looking for a forum to solve problems that some Software Engineers who are working for Bill Gates (Microsoft, of course) who, after explaining my problem, are recommending that the only way to solve the error Code 80073712 is to re-install Windows 7 Professional (in my case) even that I paid them a yearly fee of $149.00 plus Canadian taxes. Anyways, the matter is that I follow the good advise found at this Forum from someone called Niemiro who is an Administrator and Windows Update Expert Developer.

The problem is almost the same as anybody who encounter this type of code when trying to update. Due to I was not able to uninstall SP_1 because it came up with the software there was no way I could re-install the SP_1 that I download from Microsoft website. The message is clear, and therefore I run SFC fix created by Niemiro and it run flawlessly and without a problem. It created two files one called sfcdetails.txt which it was completely in blank. Then there was another file SFCFix.txt which it says as follows:

SFCFix version 2.4.3.0 by niemiro.
Start time: 2015-04-11 16:08:49.384
Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - amd64

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

This is not a good error to come across, I am hoping that we will be able to isolate the issue. This error is within the COMPONENTS registry hive, to take a further look at the hive please follow the below steps.

Can you please go the following location C:\Windows\System32\config and look for the following files:
-COMPONENTS
-Any other files that start with the word COMPONENTS
-Or any files that have a similar name to COMPONENTS (it could be spelt different, have a number, a symbol etc)
If you find any please create a folder on your desktop and copy and paste all these files into this folder.
Next can you please zip this folder -> Please name this zip file to COMPONENTS_{Insert forum username here}_{insert todays Date here}.zip For example "COMPONENTS_Go The Power_1803.Zip"
Once done, upload them for me to analyze. The file may be too big to attach to this post, please use either Dropbox or One Drive.

  1. Click on the
    Win7Orb_zps4dae3b32.jpg
button. Inside the search box type in CMD
  2. Right click on CMD => Choose Run as Administrator
  3. Inside the Command Prompt windows copy and paste the following commands
    dir %systemroot%\System32\config >1&&notepad 1
  4. Please post the contents of the notepad file back into this thread

Hello again,

The COMPONENTS hive is too small, do you have any programs that back up the registry? We have to try and restore this hive.

Click on the start button -> Inside the search field type in Powershell -> Right click on Powershell.exe -> Choose run as admin -> enter in the following command:
Get-ComputerRestorePoint >1
Notepad 1
Post the contents of 1.txt back into this thread.

Hi Power,

Thank you for your prompt reply and for your help in resolving this issue. I did follow your instructions and I did notice that the message that appeared on the Notepad_1 than I'm sending you is different than the one appeared on the screen. So I'm sending you the picture that I took after typing *Powershell.exe* to get what you are looking for. Typing alone *Powershell*, there were several options: 1) *Windows Powershell*, 2) *Windows Powershell(x86)*, 3) *Windows Powershell ISE*, 4) *Windows Powershell ISE(x86)* and 5) *Windows Powershell Modules*. I try each one of them and this is the message I got:

PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-ComputerRestorePoint

The above message is exactly I got when after typing, PoerverShell.exe and run as an administrator. (See enclosed picture). My surprise was that the Notepad was different. This is the reason I'm sending you both the picture and the notepad.

One more time thank you very much for your help.

Hi and Good Evening from Toronto,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply and for your efforts in resolving my problem. I know that even that error 8007312 looks the same to everyone I'm perfectly aware that being same error it requires a different answer. I did notice that reading other people success on same error that it needed different strategy. One way of doing things, when I have problems, is taking pictures and transfer them to my computer and show it to different groups that I'm involve with this way, makes the work much easier and the reader have better knowledge of what's going on. This time I'm enclosing two of them: One is Microsoft answer to the problem using their own troubleshooting which I'm sure you are very familiar with, and the second one is the result of your instructions.

I did follow your instructions to the letter and after opening the zip file that you send me and the folder that came with it. I must say that file COMPONENTS was not there. But you could see that there are three files that it has the dates that you are looking for: 1) Program files (x86), 2) temp and 3) Windows (See enclosed pictures). I did not open none of them but most probably it could be in the Folder Windows. So, I went to C:\Windows\System32\Confg. There are 5 folders and 21 files. Two of them are Components files: One is called Components and it has 8KB, and its dated 28/03/2015 and the second one is called Components.log which is a Text Document and it has only 1KB. The largest file in there is one called Software ant it has 86,272KB and the second largest one is called System and it has 29,184KB dated 22/04/2015.

One more time than you for your assistance in resolving my issue.

Josephus

Hello again,

Thank you for the screenshots. The MS repair tool wont fix this issue as the hive is totally empty. Can you have a look inside 04/09? map to C:\Windows\System32\config can you see COMPONENTS?

Mr. Power, Could you tell me, please, if you received the files you requested? I'm not so sure if I got it right this time.
Josephus

Hi Mr. Power,

It looks to me that you did not received it after I went back and I haven't see my reply.

The only COMPONENTS that are in C:\Windows\System32\config is one dated on today's date 25 April 2015 and it has 256 KB.

On C:Windows\Windows\, there's a file called Logs which is dated April 6, 2015. It has 28.7 GB with 93.792 files and 19.480 folders. I'm not so sure if this will help you but if you would like to look at it, let me know and I can compress it into zip file.

One more time, thank you for helping me out.

Josephus

P.S.
When I was in Rhodesia (today Zimbabwe) I used to work as an engineer for Rhodesia Railways. In 1973 I had the opportunity to visit Australia and I visited Melbourne, Sidney and Brisbane. Beautiful beaches, women and good beer. I guess the towns and cities have change since my last time. Of course it has been more than 40 years. But I'm sure that there still nice beaches, beautiful women and a great beer.

Hello agai,

Where you looking at the date inside ShadowExplorer ?

When I was in Rhodesia (today Zimbabwe) I used to work as an engineer for Rhodesia Railways. In 1973 I had the opportunity to visit Australia and I visited Melbourne, Sidney and Brisbane. Beautiful beaches, women and good beer. I guess the towns and cities have change since my last time. Of course it has been more than 40 years. But I'm sure that there still nice beaches, beautiful women and a great beer.

Everything is still good, except the beer can be questionable :rofl12:

Good morning from Toronto,

Thanks for your prompt reply. The dates are as follow (I'm enclosing also a snap shot):

Good afternoon Power from Toronto,

I truly think that we are going to win this battle. I'm right at shadow explorer and from there is a date, 04/09/2015 1:38:18pm. Then going into Windows - > System 32 -> Config ->there's a bunch of files with several dates and sizes. There's one particular file that says only Components which says as follows: Date Modified 28/03/2015; Type File; Size 8KB; Date created 23/02/2015, and date accessed 9/04/2015. And bellow this Components file there are list of there are three files with Capital letters that says: COMPONENTS LOG (Text Document)); COMPONENTS LOG1(Log1 file); COMPONENTS LOG2 (Log2 file); COMPONENTS(016888...) BLF file; ETC. There are more than 60 files with the name Components. Some of them are written in lower case and few in Capital letters. All those Components where it says Type reads either BLF file and /or REGTRANS.... which I don't know what it means. I did not find anyone that could say "hive".

I took a snap shot which, I hope, you will be able to understand what I just put in writing.

If there's anything else you need, I will do my best to provide you with the info. Thank you very much for your help. Hope to talk to you soon,

Hello again,

That file is to small as well :(

I want to see if there is a COMPONENTS hive somewhere else on the computer that was created in a back up.

SFCFix script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Go to your desktop and right click on the background -> Select New -> Text Document -> Name this file SFCFixScript.txt.
  3. Open up SFCFixScript.txt and copy all of the following text inside the code box below and paste it into SFCFixScript.txt.
    Code:
    FileScan::
    COMPONENTS
  4. Click on File -> Save. Close out of SFCFixScript.txt.
  5. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  6. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  7. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  8. SFCFix will now process the script.
  9. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  10. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

Hi Power and good Evening from Toronto,

I just completed your request and the news it seems to me a bit disappointed by its results because this is not what, most probably you expected. I took the liberty of taking a picture when a message came out after I follow to the letter your last instructions. The message says: "SFCFix Has Crashed: ' Something has gone horribly wrong and SFCFix has crashed.... etc.' (See Image 1560.jpg)". So, thinking that I could have made an error on interpreting your message, I run the SFCFix application by itself and the message, is almost identical (but more wording) than just dragging the SFCFixScript text into the Application file of SFCFx. (This message is found in Code_2.txt attached). So, I repeat your instructions for a second time and I got same message as in the picture and, as I you mention on your last message, it created a text file which I rename Code_1.txt (I'm also attaching this file).
IMG_1560.jpgView attachment Code_2.txt.txtView attachment Code_1.txt.txtView attachment Code_2.txt.txtView attachment Code_1.txt.txt
Looking back at my original post, you will see that there is a post in which I included the message that came out when the SFCFix Application was run, sometime in April, for the first time. The message in Code_2 is almost similar to the original one. run in April.

In fairness to you, I should have mention, and I failed to do so, that this problem occurred a few days after I cloned the SSD 125Gb to a much bigger SSD 250Gb because I needed more space. The program used was Acronis. I'm not so sure if this will make a difference but you should know.

When the problem occurred for the first time my intentions was to uninstalled the Service Pack 1 and re-install it again. But, unfortunately, the original CD came with the Service Pack 1 already on it and, therefore, it will not allow to do so because it's an OEM. Of course my Computer works fine and i have no problem to use it with full capacity but it annoys me the continuous message that, from time to time, Microsoft reminds me, thru an important message, that Windows could no check for updates.

Anyways, I can't thank you enough for your effort and time in working to resolve an issue that, seen various forums, I'm not the only one who has it. I know that you have the capacity to resolve it and I do believe that the answer will come to you very soon.

Josephus

Hello again Josephus,

Lets try another way:

  1. Download SFCFix.txt (attached to this post), and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFixScript.txt - do not rename it.
  2. On your Desktop, you should now see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  3. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  4. SFCFix will now begin to upload your CBS logfiles to our server.
  5. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  6. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.
