Windows Update Problem Info

Hello,

I am having a problem with Windows Update and a friend of mine (bgmCoder) said that you were able to help him with his problem and suggested I ask here.

First off I am using Windows 7 Home Premium with service pack 1. 64 bit.

Update has been getting slower over time (don’t remember when I first noticed it). Earlier in the week it was showing that I had updates to download and after I clicked Download, although it said it was downloading them, it never did. I even waited an hour and 15 minutes once and nothing. (Now it doesn’t say that, it says I have never installed updates.) The same thing happens when I check for updates. The only thing that happens is that svchost starts using up my processor. I have to stop the process “wuauserv” in order for it to stop.
Sometimes I find TrustedInstaller.exe eating up the processor.

I have installed the Windows Update Standalone Pack- Windows6.1- KB947821-v34-x64. It appeared to install, started looking for updates, maxed the processor and did nothing else.

I have used Microsoft Fixit.wu.RNP.Run. The same thing happens as when I try to check for updates. It says “checking for updates online” and maxes my processor. It does nothing else.

And have used the Windows Update Diagnostic (Troubleshooting Pack Cabinet).
It came back with the error code: 40070490.

I checked History and here are some updates that failed to install.
Some of the latest updates failed to install. The updates and error codes are below.
KB947821------8024001E
KB2310138-----80200001
KB3147071-----8007045B
KB3146706-----8007045B
KB3146963-----8007045B
KB3145739-----80080005
KB3149090-----80010108

Have run svc /scannow in Command and it comes back that everything is fine.

I do not know if this is a symptom but I include it just in case: This computer is about 6yrs old. I inherited it when I took this position about 1 1/2yrs ago. At the time the computer seemed a bit slower than I expected and it is still pretty slow. That combined with the Update problems I have been having I decided to do a System Recovery about a month ago. I have done 3 System Recoveries and each time the recovery went fine. But each time, although Microsoft Update started out working okay, after 1 or 2 time updating, it slowed down and then stopped working. After the first time I figured that the preinstalled Norton Antivirus was causing the problem and deleted it first thing the second time did the recovery, but with similar results.
Each time I had to restore the computer from a saved System Image. Each time I restored it using the System Image it took longer to restore, so I figure that doing so repeatedly is not good for the computer and I do not intend to try doing a system recovery again.

I ran SFCFix. The results were:

I hope you can figure out what the trouble is. I have tried everything I can see to do.
Thank you.

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named LiquidTension. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phrase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

Hello,

Thank you for your description of the issues at hand. Let's start by running a fresh scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT). Please download and run SURT, and provide the generated log in your next reply.

In addition, please let me know if you intend on upgrading to Windows 10.

IGJdB0T.png
System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) Scan

  • Download and run the latest version of SURT.
  • Click Yes when prompted to install. Installation can take ~15 minutes. Please do not cancel.
  • Upon completion (when Installation Complete appears), copy the contents of the SURT log found atC:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log and paste in your next reply.
  • Note: If the file is too large to attach, upload to a service such as Dropbox, One Drive or SendSpace and provide a direct download link in your next reply.

That is fine by me. I have hit a dead end and appreciate any help that you and LiquidTension can give.
I see his post below and will follow the instructions at my first opportunity.
Thank you.

Well, it took over 40 minutes to run although I do not know how long. The last time I saw it the box “Initializing Installation” was still there and the progress bar had still not budged. But when I came back 2 hours later I found that it had run.

When I went to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS there was no ChecksSUR.log. There were only the 5 files below. When I double-clicked one I was asked where I wanted to extract it.

CbsPersist_20160508181904

CbsPersist_20160509001354

Are these the log you want?

Hello,

I followed the instructions for the clean boot, ran SURT and there is still no CheckSUR. log.

Hello,

Please go ahead and run Windows Update. Search for and attempt to install available updates (excluding upgrade to Windows 10).

Let me know if any updates fail to install, and if so, please provide the names (KB numbers) and associated error codes.

There is no change.
I let it search for updates for almost 3 hours before stopping it. Had to use Task Manager to stop svchost again.

Hello,

Did you reverse the clean boot steps from earlier? If you did, please go ahead and perform a clean boot once more and attempt to search for updates. Let me know how you get on.

In addition, please download and run the following diagnostic tool, and attach the generated logs in your next reply.

xlK5Hdb.png
Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) Scan

  • Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (x64) and save the file to your Desktop.
  • Right-click FRST64.exe and select
    AVOiBNU.jpg
Run as administrator to run the programme.
  • Click Yes to the disclaimer.
  • Ensure the Addition.txt box is checked.
  • Click the Scan button and let the programme run.
  • Upon completion, click OK, then OK on the Addition.txt pop up screen.
  • Two logs (FRST.txt & Addition.txt) will now be open on your Desktop. Attach both logs in your next reply.

LiquidTension, I am sorry to say this but we are going to have to back up a little. I don’t know what I did (I think I must have done something wrong when I did the clean boot) but started having major problems. Was taking 2 or 3 minutes to do the simplest things.

I limped the computer to System Restore and restored it to the point when we started this and started through your instruction again.

After doing the clean boot again I made sure to reset msconfig to start normally and restarted the computer. When it came back up the “User Account Control” window popped up asking to allow a program named: SSBkgdUpdate.exe to run. I figured that it had something to do with SURT and said, “yes”.
Watching my System Explorer window I saw something called SystemExplore64.exe running for about 15 minutes or so and then everything went back to normal.

I checked for the CheckSUR.log and, as before, it was not there.

I then followed the instructions from your post (05-20-2016 09:56AM).

I had a look at the SFCFix.txt that was generated and as there are 1 or 2 things that are different from the first one I did not think I should continue on with your instructions till I checked with you. The new SFCFix.txt is below. Sorry about the backtracking.

Hello,

Thank you for the information. Let's go ahead and proceed with the diagnostic scan from my previous post, to help ascertain the exact state of the computer. SSBkgdUpdate.exe is related to ScanSoft software rather than SURT - this is something we can look into.

Given you have performed a System Restore, we may need to also reapply the SURT fix from earlier, but for now please proceed with the following scan.

Before I saw your latest post I had to do a second System Restore as I was having the same problems. I do not know whether it is the clean boot or SURT or a combination of the two but the computer doesn't like something. So we are starting a square one as far as the computer is concerned.

I followed your instructions and uploaded the 2 files. I tried to attach them but do not see indication that they were attached. If they were not, please let me know.
