Hello,

I am facing a issue with my uncle's computer, Windows Update ask constantly to restart the computer to finish an installation. Even if we do as asked, the WIndows Update popup ask again to do the same operation.

I have tried to run the sfc/scannow but nothing was found.

Here is the result of the SFCFix :

My CBS logfiles are too large to upload, I will add them in the next post with the SFCFixScript.

Thank you for your help.

OK, sorry for the delay. Please do the following.

1. Click your start button and type cmd in the search box.
2. Right-click on cmd that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator. Answer Yes to the UAC prompt if it appears.
3. Copy/Paste the following into the command-prompt window and hit enter.
reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate /s >1.txt && notepad 1.txt

4. Notepad will open showing the WU info. Can you copy and paste this into your next reply?

Here the WU info :

Please do the following.

Step#1 - Retrieve Software Hive
Note: The Software hive has confidential and sensitive information in it so please send me a PM with a link to the hive so it's not in the public form.

  • Open RegBack by clicking on your Start button and clicking on Registry Backup and Restore. Answer Yes on the User Account Control dialog if prompted.
  • Click the New Backup button.
  • Click the link that says "Click here to view details of the hives in the backup".
  • Uncheck the "Current User (recommended)" checkbox at the top of the form. Keep "System (recommended)" checked.
  • At the bottom of the form, uncheck all options except "C:\Windows\System32\config\SOFTWARE" and click OK.
  • Click the Start button to begin the backup.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see two entries in this list. Right-click on the one from today and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see one file which is named SOFTWARE.
  • Copy this file to your Desktop and overwrite any one that is currently there.
  • Now right click on this file on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file(s) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and then just PM me your link.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBack program now.

Sorry the OS is in french, I don't know where is "Registry Backup and Restore" to perform the operation

Try this instead.

Manually Delete Registry Key

1. Click your Start button and type regedit in the search box.
2. Right-click on regedit.exe that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator. Answer Yes to the UAC prompt.
3. The registry editor will open which is a window divided vertically into two panes. Make sure you scroll all the way to the top of the screen and click any black downward pointing arrows so that they turn white and all the keys are collapsed. It should look similar to the following.
Capture.JPG

4. Now click the arrow next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and it will expand all the subkeys beneath it.
5. Scroll down and find the subkey named SOFTWARE and expand that. Continue expanding the following ones Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update
6. Beneath Component Based Servicing you should see a key named RebootRequired
7. Right-click on the key named RebootRequired and select Permissions...
8. On the Permissions dialog click the Advanced button.
9. Click the Owner tab on the Advanced Security Settings dialog.
10. Click the Other users or groups... button
11. Type Everyone in the text box and click OK.
12. Check the box "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects".
13. Click the Permissions tab again and uncheck "Include inheritable permissions from this object's parent".
14. If prompted with a Windows Security warning with Add and Remove buttons, click Add.
15. Click OK to close the Advanced Security Settings dialog.
16. Make sure the Everyone group is selected in the Permissions dialog and ensure that the checkbox for Full Control under the Allow column is checked. Click OK.
17. Now, right click on the RebootRequired key and select Delete. Answer Yes to the confirm dialog.

I manually delete the key "RebootRequired" in the registry.
Do I need to perform an another task before trying Windows Update ?

The windows update service seems stop even after the reboot.

Will the line "sc start wuauserv && sc config wuauserv start= enabled" help me to fix the issue ?

I run this line "sc config wuauserv start= delayed-auto && sc start wuauserv" to be able to search a Windows update
I am waiting for result now
