[SOLVED] [7SP1 x64] KB4041681 fails to install

That's fine!

Windows update search works fine. It shows me the updates available, 24 currently. This issue just seems to surround the KB4054518 update, which is the Security Monthly Quality Round update. I had a similar issue with the previous update ([Win7SP1 x64] Can't install Security monthly Quality Rollup KB4034664 - 80073712) and the KB4041681 reference in this thread title is another previous Security update. I don't have any problems installing other updates, but PeterJ asked me not to install any others until he'd sorted this issue, presumably so it didn't interfere with his diagnosis/actions.

Is this one 2018-06 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4284826) on the list or similar from 2018-07?

Ok, try to install the most recent Security Monthly Quality Rollup if it fails collect the c:\Windows\Logs\cbs\CBS.log zip it and share the zip file like you did before.

From the Control Panel open Windows Update > View Update History and tell me what is the last Security Monthly Quality Rollup that was installed Successfully and the first Update on the list with status Failed.

I don't have a Successful install of this patch, the first failed instance in the history is 31/10/2017 for KB4041681, though I'm sure it was happening before that so maybe the history has been reset.

Most recent and oldest updates. Will you need a screenshot of the updates that have failed in between?

Hi,

Scroll down on the list and locate the first update named 2007-?? Security Monthly Quality Rollup with Status Successful and tell me the month and KB number please. I need to know what was the last Security Monthly Quality Rollup that the system installed correctly.

Also I need to check the registry...

Retrieve the Components Hive
  1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file
  2. Please copy the COMPONENTS file to your desktop
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again
  3. Right-click on this file on your Desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your Desktop
  4. If file will is too large to upload to the forum please share the file using a service like Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, or upload to www.sendspace.com and just provide the link for the file here

Export Registry keys
  • download the script ExportSbSRegistry.cmd and save it to the Desktop
  • right-click the file ExportSbSRegistry.cmd and select Run as administrator
  • when the script ends a new file called SoftwareSBS.zip will be located on the Desktop
  • If zip file is too large to upload to the forum please share the file using a service like Dropbox, Google Drive, etc. or upload to SendSpace and just provide the link for the file here

Capture Process Monitor Trace
  • Download Process Monitor and save it to the Desktop
  • Run the KB4284826 until you get the prompt to confirm if you want to install the update. Don't accept the prompt yet.
  • Run Process Monitor from the Desktop. Leave this running while you perform the next steps
  • Return to the Update window prompt and click Yes to start the installation of the update
  • Stop Process Monitor as soon as the update fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.
    iiTxmntz9hzmYzZrKwGk9tmnhW5kF0.png
  • Select the File menu... Save... and save the file to your Desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
  • Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log.

Note: To produce a smaller log is recommended to close all other programs that are not needed before starting the trace.
