[SOLVED] [7SP1 x64] update fails on configuring after reboot

Re: Win 7 SP1 x64 update fails on configuring after reboot

The command runs successfully. I get that exact registry key info back.

Re: Win 7 SP1 x64 update fails on configuring after reboot

OK, try installing any of the other updates to see if any of them install.

Re: Win 7 SP1 x64 update fails on configuring after reboot

Can I also have the CBSPersist file that was previous to CbsPersist_20171102153329.log

Re: Win 7 SP1 x64 update fails on configuring after reboot

I was able to install both KB4041083, a .NET update, and KB2803821, a Windows update. Not sure why, but 4041681, the October rollup, shows as failed by doesn't show as needed.

And here is the prior CBSPerist file.

Re: Win 7 SP1 x64 update fails on configuring after reboot

Please do the following.

FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
2. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
3. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
4. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Re: Win 7 SP1 x64 update fails on configuring after reboot

Delete any files from c:\windows\logs\cbs that you can.

Check for updates and attempt to install them again. If they fail, please zip up your entire CBS log folder and upload for me to review.

Re: Win 7 SP1 x64 update fails on configuring after reboot

so far so good! All updates seem to have applied. Still trying to figure out why October rollup isn't being detected as needed, but everything else applied successfully! Now to go back to normal boot mode and hope things continue to work.

Re: Win 7 SP1 x64 update fails on configuring after reboot

Great news. You can always try manually downloading the October 2017 update and installing to see if it works.

Re: Win 7 SP1 x64 update fails on configuring after reboot

Run services.msc. Stop brain service. Start brain service. View hidden updates. Restore hidden updates. Apply hidden updates.
Back in normal startup/boot mode, anti-virus reinstalled. October update installed successfully. Still fighting KB3110329 and KB3139398. Trying them one at a time.

Re: Win 7 SP1 x64 update fails on configuring after reboot

Getting better! If you still have issues with those two updates, check for updates and ensure that KB3110329 still shows up. (We want to attempt only one).

When it fails, zip up and attach your most current CBS.log.

Thanks.

Re: Win 7 SP1 x64 update fails on configuring after reboot

Will get to it as soon as I can. Those two failing updates had downloaded previously and were then hidden, so checking for updates doesn't show whether it is really still needed or not. Unless you object, I plan to stop relevant services and delete the SoftwareDistribution folder (c:\windows\softwaredistribution) and then check for updates again. I don't know of another way to get rid of the existing updates so I can do an accurate check of whether it is still needed or not.

Re: Win 7 SP1 x64 update fails on configuring after reboot

I renamed SoftwareDistribution instead of deleting. After searching for updates, both those showed as needed. I installed only KB3110329. Unfortunately still fails on Configuring Windows stage after reboot, although install initially shows as successful. CBS zip attached.

Update attempted with normal boot, forgot to put it back in clean boot mode. Not sure that matters at this point as this KB is failing regardless of boot mode.

I did notice something else while looking at the SoftwareDistribution folder, which has me scratching my head. File type .bin is associated with (opens with) VLC Media Player. Don't know if this could be causing issues, just throwing it out there in case it points you to something.

Re: Win 7 SP1 x64 update fails on configuring after reboot

OK, let's find out what is going on. Please do the following.

1. Download this file: http://live.sysinternals.com/procmon.exe
2. Run ProcMon.exe
3. Go to the Options menu, and click Enable Boot Logging and then close Procmon.
4. Create a folder on your Desktop in which you'll save the logs.
5. Try installing only KB3110329 as you usually would.
6. Reboot your computer when requested.
7. Relaunch ProcMon. A dialogue box will appear asking if you wish to save the collected data. Please click Yes.
8. Save the file in the default format (.PML)
9. Save the file in a folder on your Desktop that you have created in Step 4.
10. Close ProcMon.
11. Zip up the entire folder containing ProcMon logs and upload to a filesharing service for me to review.
12. Please also zip up your entire c:\windows\logs\cbs folder and zip/upload to a filesharing service for me to review.

Re: Win 7 SP1 x64 update fails on configuring after reboot

Perfect. I got the information I needed from this. I need one more log please.
C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log

Re: Win 7 SP1 x64 update fails on configuring after reboot

Last time you requested that file, you had me send setupapi.app.log instead, because setupapi.dev.log was in a different folder. See posts #8 and #9 in this topic. Please confirm which file you want.
Thanks!

Re: Win 7 SP1 x64 update fails on configuring after reboot

I do want the file mentioned. Thanks. It should be in that location. It may be hidden but it's there.

Re: Win 7 SP1 x64 update fails on configuring after reboot

Bingo.

Code:
!!! idb: Failed to update active driver store entry, Error = 0x00000005
!!! idb: Failed to publish 'wdmaudio.inf', Error = 0x00000005
!!! idb: Error 5: Access is denied.
!!! sto: Failed to publish 'C:\windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\wdmaudio.inf_amd64_neutral_1f5f92106e781863\wdmaudio.inf'. Error = 0x00000005
!!! sto: Failed to publish driver package. Time = 16 ms, Error = 0x00000005
     sto: {Publish Driver Package: exit(0x00000005)} 11:18:30.096

Can you go to C:\windows\inf and then locate wdmaudio.inf. Right-click on this file and go to properties. Click the Security tab. Under the Group or user names list, give full permission to SYSTEM and Administrators
