Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Run DISM just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log

Hi. Sorry I took so long to reply. I deleted at least 10 GB worth of files to free up space on the PC but when I logged on the next day, there was only about 800 MB of free space left! I was trying to find out what was consuming the disk space.
Anyway, here are the files that you need. Thanks again for your patience.

*I found this 22 GB file, 'CbsPersist_20180212143812.log' in the CBS folder as I was uploading the CBS log here. I suspect this is what's eating up disk space. Is it safe to delete this?

Yes it is. Are you interested in upgrading to Windows 10? This would likely be the fastest way to resolve the issue.

It's good you mentioned that. I was about to ask if all these issues can be solved with an update to Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 - the machine is still in Windows 8. I'm a bit concerned about the license though, because the owner of this machine either lost the license or doesn't have one. He doesn't have any idea whether he got a license from where he purchased the PC. Thanks.

*By the way, should I decide to update to Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, can I delete this file first - 'CbsPersist_20180212143812.log', to make space for the update?

Yes, you can. The licence still works if it's activated now. Please download MCT and try to upgrade to Windows 10.

Hi. I was able to download the upgrade to Win 8.1, but the install failed with error code 0x80070714. I also found out that the Windows 10 installer was no longer available for free because I already missed the free upgrade period. I tried a Windows 10 Pro USB installer that I previously used on a different PC but it didn't work, and got a message that read, "incorrect license" or "wrong license" - I can't recall exactly.
Is there a way to just repair the Win 8 installation using the Win 8.1 installer? Anyway, I'm trying to find information on the error code. Thanks!

Hi,

If your Windows 8 is activated, you can still upgrade to Windows 10, but in order to do that you first have to upgrade to Windows 8.1.

The fastest route would be to go with a clean install if that is an option for you.

I see. By clean install, you mean wiping the OS partition before installing Win 8.1? I was trying to avoid that so as not to have to re-install the applications, but if there's no other way, then a clean install is what I'll do. However, I am again worried about the license because I don't have it. How would I be able to activate Win 8.1? Thanks.

*By the way, this is a pre-built machine and Win 8 Single Language came pre-installed. I can't find any sticker on the PC with a serial number on it.

If the machine came prebuilt, there is a very high chance your product key is integrated into the UEFI. Is there a recovery partition available for you to use? I'm trying to find out as much info as possible.

Also, please run DISM once again and attach CBS.log.

Yes, I believe the machine was pre-built. Looking at Disk Management, I am seeing 2 recovery partitions, one is 1000 MB and the other is 24.41 GB. I found a Lenovo Rescue System installed on the machine, and from what I've read, this is used to restore the PC to factory setting or to previous backup status. I'll check it out.

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
6. SFCFix will now process the script.
7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

SFC Scan

1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each
   
   sfc /scannow
   
   Wait for this to finish before you continue
   
   copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please include your DISM.log and do the following:

Export Component Based Servicing

1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.
   
   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\
   
4. Once selected, click File > Export....
5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
6. Name this file ComponentBasedServicing (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
7. Right Click on the ComponentBasedServicing file on your Desktop and choose Send To -> Compressed (Zipped) Folder.

Once done please upload ComponentBasedServicing.zip via DropBox OneDrive or SendSpace etc. and include the link with your reply.

FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.
