[SOLVED] August Security Update failed to install

Sorry, forgot to click on "Post Reply" .

No problem, done that myself on more occasions than I choose to remember.

Hive appears to have been loaded OK.

Have not attempted to update yet, as I figured you might want me to run checks before doing that.

I fixed the missing keys and values in your software hive. Checked it here.
Try to update and report the result.
If it fails attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

No problem, will do.

Back when I've finished updating.

  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Install Update with DISM
  1. Download the update MSU here: http://download.windowsupdate.com/c..._d2e57a8f0eaed09830aec9557d52a1db4282188f.msu
  2. Copy the MSU file to a convenient location (such as C:\temp).
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  5. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    cd C:\temp
replace C:\temp with your path if different

    expand windows8.1-kb4580325-x64_d2e57a8f0eaed09830aec9557d52a1db4282188f.msu -f:* C:\temp

    DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\temp\windows8.1-kb4580325-x64.cab

  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
  7. Make sure to allow the computer to restart if prompted.

If you receive any other message:
  8. Right-click on the Command Prompt window and click Select All, this will invert all of the colors by selecting the text, now press enter. All of this text is now copied.
  9. Paste (Ctrl+V) it into your next post.
  10. Zip and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Operation completed successfully, no reboot was requested, but I rebooted anyway.

Do you wish me to attempt to update ?

Do you wish for a cbs.log, or was that only in case the operation failed.

Fixlog attached below. Folders still not present.

The tool linked to is just an installer, when run it just links you to Adobe, which tells you that Flash has been retired and is no longer available.

I appreciate how frustrating this must be for you, and I appreciate all the help you have provided. I had not expected so many obstacles to be put in your path.

If you feel that I need to do a repair install, or a refresh to restore functionality, I am not averse to doing that.

Ah, okay. I expected it to just download the installer. Thanks for your feedback on this.

Let try one final fix. It it fails we gonna remove remnants of adobe flash player.
If that fails as well. You can perform a repair install.

Step 1:
WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.
  • Download the file SFCFix.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the
    myjIXnC.png
    SFCFix.exe executable and release it.
    1p8eDnI.gif
  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply.

Step 2:
Restart the computer.
Check Windows Update again and report the result.
If it fails, attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

There appears to have been a partial failure with the SFCFix, but I attempted to update anyway, and as I expected it might, it failed again on restart at 98% installed.

I think we better cleanup all remnants of Adobe Flash. It is no longer supported by Adobe and you already uninstalled it.

FRST Search
  1. Click the Start button and choose Control Panel.
  2. In the upper right corner ensure the View by: is set to Category.
  3. Select the Programs group.
  4. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link. This will bring up the Server Manager dialog.
Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep this dialog open while you perform the remaining steps. You can minimize it if you wish but keep it open.

  5. Right-click on the file FRST64.exe and choose Run as administrator.
  6. Copy and paste SearchAll:adobe-flash-for-windows into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
  7. When the scan is complete, a message will display that 'SearchReg.txt' is saved in the same folder FRST was started from. Notepad will open this file also. Close Notepad and attach the file 'SearchReg.txt' to your next reply.
  8. You may close any remaining open windows now.

As far as I'm aware, if you're using the SearchAll: directive with FRST, you use the Search Files button, not the Search Registry button to initiate the search. So that's what I did, log below (note: because of using the Search Files button, log file is named Search.txt).

If you had a specific reason for giving me the instructions in the way you did, my apologies for presuming, and please let me know and I'll run the search again.
