[SOLVED] August Security Update failed to install

Correct. Sorry for the faulty instructions.
No problem, it's easily done. Done it myself on too many occasions.

Ran fixlist, and when I looked at the results noticed that although all the files/folders had been removed, most of the Reg entries stated not found, so "turned Windows features on" and ran fixlist again. This time the registry items were removed.

So have attached two fixlogs (1 & 2) below.

Update failed, this time did not get to reboot before failure.

  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2:
Restart the computer.
Check Windows Update again and report the result.
If it fails, attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

FRST Registry Search
  1. Click the Start button and choose Control Panel.
  2. In the upper right corner ensure the View by: is set to Category.
  3. Select the Programs group.
  4. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link. This will bring up the Server Manager dialog.
Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep this dialog open while you perform the remaining steps. You can minimize it if you wish but keep it open.

  8. You may close any remaining open windows now.

Success !!! (y)

Computer has now successfully installed KB5005076. Thank you for your help, your patience, and your expertise, in resolving this matter.

I am presuming that the problem has been intitially caused by the incorrect/incomplete removal of Adobe Flash by one of my earlier updates, compounded by my subsequent attempts to resolve things myself.

Don't know whether you still need to see my latest fixlog, but I have attached it below anyway.

To be honest, I have found the whole recovery process fascinating, and would like to learn more ..... is that possible, and if it is, is there any pre-existing knowledge required ?

Presumably yes. After that the installation of KB5005076 may have gone wrong so we removed that also.

Currently we are low on instructors. Send a private message to Will Watts or jcgriff2.

Your welcome. I will mark this thread as solved.

Have a nice weekend.
