[SOLVED] BSOD at Sleep / Hibernate Modes

I have an HP dv7-1020us laptop that came with Vista SP1 in 2008.

I've updated Intel 5100 wifi from Intel 12+ times since.

Currently running Windows 7 x64.

Same w/ NVIDIA video & Realtek Ethernet drivers.
 
Ok...WiFi driver didn't work, in fact, I had to go back to the restore I did before downloading the driver. I am super impressed with your site and the experts that are helping me...I believe there is a solution to everything, and that is how I have tried to resolve problems on my own, being self-taught for the past 30+ years (Apple II+ was my first PC). What do you think can be the resolution of this problem? My company's IT man would say to just re-install everything, but I can't go that route because of the time it would take to re-install. I think we are close to a solution...we have never discarded hardware defects...I would like to think that my experiences with SONY Vaio systems will continue to be positive, but it is a possibility. Should I send you the MEMORY.DMP file I mentioned before?

To answer your questions directly, my experience with BSODs at sleep/hibernate can be:
  • Networking drivers
  • BIOS (needs update)
  • Internet Security Suite - Norton, McAfee, KIS, etc...
  • Other app
  • Hardware failure

There may even be a Sony app that's responsible.

It's hard to tell at this point. The lack of dumps since 6 June is troublsome.

Hopefully the full kernel dump will yield a clue, but it's now ~2.5 weeks old and nearly 900 MB -- a lot of info to pour through! But that's what we're here for!

Ok...not a problem, as your suggestions are always worth the shot...I'll send the link soon! I don't want to sound repetitious but this system you have set up really gives me faith in being able to resolve when lost...just re-installing everything never sat well with me...there are solutions and I thank you!
 
Just another thought, do you think that the intermittent shutting down of my Bluetooth as I explained in this thread, may have something to do with the BSOD's? I now am not creating minidump files since 6-6-12, which is concerning. I don't see any reasons why this should be based on my settings. I agree with the prior conclusion in this threat that a service or device is not being alerted or understands that I am going into sleep mode; therefore the crashes.

Any new thoughts? I mentioned the Bluetooth only because the problem coincides with the beginning of the BSOD's. How can I discard that theory?

I ran Verifier again and this time it generated a BSOD and minidump file (at last). It is attached. The only other thing I did was to change my power settings from performance and never sleeping to balanced and sleep after 30 minutes. I am hoping you will see something in the dump file. Please let me know if you need to see any other files. Thanks.

Same driver, same date of driver, same issue. Are you sure Sony website has no update for this particular driver?
 
Which driver is it again? Just to be sure. Networking or WiFi? And I should uninstall and delete the previous one or do an update?
 
The attached are the devices that show in Device Manager. There are also several unrecognized Bluetooth Devices, see attached:

I mention this because the Bluetooth services disappear and reappear intermittently.

Bluetooth may be whacking out, or it may actually be getting intermittent access to nearby bluetooth devices. If you find no use for it, you may wanna uninstall Bluetooth drivers from your system.

As for the drivers I'm referring too, both, though the one specifically mentioned in the crashdump is your Intel Wifi.
 
I had to install the update in safe mode because it was hanging and not completing the installation in standard mode. It is now up and running. Should I continue to run Verifier in the background and does it use up a lot of resources?

As to the Bluetooth, I will play around with that later after solving the bigger problem. The only device I use with the Bluetooth is an external mouse, which I like to use. Let me know if I should send any more files or if you have any other suggestions. I have not gone into sleep mode since, but will attempt to do so in approx. 1 hour. Thanks.
 
Unfortunately I had to force a shutdown again...so far, yet so close to a solution. Earlier today a BSOD did return, and as you saw, the WiFi driver / adapter seemed to be the culprit. It bothers me greatly to just throw my arms up and say, "let's just do a complete system re-install", because the problem may not be solved and the next time, I really won't know what to do...so, you guys have been great with all of your expert advice, and I would like to continue trying to solve this problem. I think it will be helpful to others that may be going through the same or similar situations.

So, what's the next step? I will turn off the Verifier after one other hunch I have and will be back. Thanks.
 
So my suggestions would be:
- Update the BIOS, be careful of course.

If that doesn't fix it then:

- Buy a USB wireless device. And turn off the built in Vaio wireless and uninstall the drivers.
That way you can wait for a updated driver and confirm that it is indeed the in-built wireless adapter.

Or simply re-install.
 
The only way to be more precise with our diagnosis is with more data, which means either providing us a crashdump for a BSOD that occurred when Driver Verifier was active, or to upload your latest MEMORY.DMP file in Windows directory to some 3rd party filesharing site like Mirrorcreator.com. Preferably you compress it first.
 
The crashdump file I sent yesterday and which is attached to this reply was generated during the time Verifier was active. Also, the MEMORY.DMP file is quite large now...approx. 1 GB! I will zip it but it will still be quite large.

The kernel dump heavily compresses, but it still will be rather large, hence why your only option will be to upload it to a filesharing site.

From this crashdump, it's still the network driver messing up. Driver Verifier's I/O filter driver was present, but it looks like your network driver crapped out before DV even got a chance to handle it. As in the network driver started the I/O but could not pass it to the next driver (DV's filter driver) in line for servicing the I/O. It's still because of that "request not supported" error.

Your network drivers are most likely bugged. If updating them from the Sony website doesn't work, then there's an issue with your network controller, which means your motherboard is bad. Sony VAIOs ship bad PCs time from time, and yours very well is one of them.

You can still provide the kernel dump if you wish. I'm not sure the diagnosis will change any from it but it'll be good to have a further look at it.
