[SOLVED] BSOD at Sleep / Hibernate Modes

Thanks for your response. I am hoping it isn't the hardware as I will be traveling internationally on a business trip and don't have the time to backup / reinstall, etc. A possible good sign is that I had the unit for 2 months without any issues before it started happening; i.e. hopefully it is software and not hardware.

Below is the link to the MEMORY.DMP file. It is a little over 180MB compressed.

What version and date do you show for the faulty network driver?

Depending on your confirmation of date and version, perhaps it would be best to go back to the original driver the unit came with. Good luck!

Dec 12, 2011. The date has not changed at all since your first crashdump you gave us at the beginning of the thread, which means it has not been updated or altered in any way since we first started diagnosing this.

Also, I want to add that your very first couple of crashes also mentioned some stupid "High Speed" bluetooth filter driver by Intel. You'll want to uninstall this, or perchance discover an update for it, too. Remember, start with Sony site first before dabbling in manufacturer sites for this kinda thing. update also your Realtek and audio drivers, as they most likely share resources with your wifi.

It's funny that on the SONY website they have a later date listed, refer to an update, and then have the same version number as before. Very confusing! See attachment. I tried going with the manufacturer's sites a few years ago and it was disastrous, for another Vaio that was spectacular. This one has very good specs and perks but these problems have taken a lot of my time and productivity. Thanks for the advice, but maybe I should get with SONY and ask them if they have other updates (chat live online).

As to the Bluetooth you mentioned, yes, that is the other intermittent problem with this unit. Interestingly enough, when turning off the WiFi (switch), Bluetooth is also not active, so the link is there too. Maybe that is the problem? I'll give that a shot, as well. Will let you know.

Do you show a date on the Bluetooth Driver? There is an update on the SONY site for the Bluetooth Adapter Driver. Although I don't see anything for the Filter Driver you mentioned.

Driver dates are very confusing. The manufacturer can package a 2009 driver inside a package that's dated 2010 or later.
Version numbers are the same - the version number of a particular file may not have any relationship to the version of the entire package.
Also, OEM's sometimes use different versions than the manufacturer of the device.

You can find the dates of the drivers on your system fairly easily - but finding the dates of the drivers inside the package is sometimes a challenge. It requires a bit of skill to know/use all the different file extractors out there (I only know a few).

Also, note that this is a posting of an Intel driver on the Sony website. Often the OEM (Sony in this case) will only post a few of the updates - so checking at the Intel Download Center ( http://downloadcenter.intel.com ) may help you to locate an even newer version.

Try this driver: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...64-bit)*&DownloadType= Software Applications
The package version dates from March of 2012 - so it may contain newer drivers.

You can determine the dates of drivers for a particular device by going into Device Manager, opening up the device's properties, then going to Driver tab followed by Driver Details. It won't tell you the date, per se, but rather the version, which counts the same. Also, the date of the package itself is shown in the Driver tab.

Also, if you call up Sony tech support (which will be a nightmarish experience) and manage to soldier through it all, sometimes OEMs will have hotfix versions of drivers available to install on a need-to basis. You'll eventually have to call them anyways to get this fixed if it ends up being hardware.

Only download the driver - UNLESS you use the Intel ProSet utility to connect (most people use Windows to connect).

The version link you sent me points to a Version 14.3.1 where the latest I found is 15.1.1 (I sent you the link). I plan on downloading only the driver.

I didn't check the version (because of the previous discussion).
But I found a March 2012 and you found a May 2012 - so, in general, newer is better (and more likely to contain updated versions inside of the package).

I downloaded 15.1.1 from Intel and uninstalled the previous and installed in Safe Mode. So far, so good. I will try to put this baby to sleep now and let you know. By the way, I had a live chat with Sony and they sent me to the SONY site with the original driver from August 2011. Then they insisted on helping with BSOD issues starting from scratch. Evidently they don't keep a database with previous cases and the 10-15 hours of exercises I went through with them. They may have some good techs, but nothing like you guys in this site. I'll be back in a few to confirm if it works for now.

EDIT: MERGED THIS POST WITH THE OTHER, AND REOPENED THE TOPIC - usasma

I just returned to my last post and saw that the thread was closed. I received another BSOD as the problem was not solved. My last thread was:

When trying to get into sleep mode, again, the screen went dark but did not go into sleep mode. I had to force a shutdown. Unfortunately when I do that a minidump file is not created. I have now set my power option as "balanced" and am waiting to see if it generates another BSOD on its own when attempting to go to sleep. Verifier is also still running. Please let me know what went wrong with the previous thread. In the event that there isn't anything wrong, can a closed thread be reopened? Thanks.

Did the Sony tech appear to know anything about BSOD's?
Updating drivers is done on general principle - we presume that the newer drivers have fewer bugs (otherwise they wouldn't need to release a newer driver).
jcgriff2 has drawn together an outstanding team here that can fix just about anything!

OK, are you able to sleep/hibernate yet?
Could you please upload your latest memory dumps (the last 2 or 3)? I can't seem to sort out the sequence of them in the previous pages (I have eye problems). Zip them up and upload them with your next post.

FYI - in the olde days (XP), sleep/hibernate issues were almost solely due to video drivers. When Vista came out things changed significantly and we find that video, storage, chipset, USB, and network drivers (and sometimes even other drivers) are involved. Add to this the additional complications of the dual WiFi/WWAN adapters and the WiDi/Virtu display stuff and the driver landscape becomes very cluttered.

I'll use the most recent memory dumps to see if I can point you to a couple of other drivers to update.
Please bear in mind that Sony sometimes adds stuff to their drivers - and the drivers that I recommen (most times) won't have all the special features that Sony does. That's OK for us while testing, and if you need those special features you can go back to them after we've fixed the sleep/hibernate issues.

Those memory dumps are huge...180MB+ compressed, but I can send it again, especially after the updating of the WiFi driver. The MEMORY.DMP file is one, but should I send any others? I can run a fresh series of tests and send them to you. Like I said before, I never had any complaints with SONY and I really enjoy their VAIO line, but this one has been very tempting to consider other lines in the market. Still, I will not give up until finding the answer, shorts of re-install!

Here are the last tests attached. Thanks! I think I somehow have to get this unit to crash and cause a BSOD again for us to get somewhere but let me know!

Personally I have to wonder about the CrypKey software
More to follow later on today....

Thanks for the help. I have a few things going on this morning so won't be able to focus on this problem until later this afternoon. However, anything I can do in the background I will do. Please let me know why you said that about CrypKey. What do I need it for, because I will uninstall it?

Last night the unit shut down again but did not create a Minidump file or did not add to the MEMORY.DMP file. Are there any other diagnostics I can run and send to you?
