[SOLVED] C: always dirty after reboot, Windows updates will fail

Let's reset Windows Update and see where we're at.

Run Windows Repairs
1. Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
2. Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...
Extract.JPG

3. Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.
4. A folder named tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio will be extracted to the desktop. Once the extraction is complete the folder will open.
5. Inside this folder, there is a folder named Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. Open this folder as well.

6. Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open. Note: Please make sure all of your programs are closed and anything you were working on is saved as we will be rebooting.
7. When the program opens, click the Reboot to Safe Mode button at the bottom of the screen. Answer Yes to allow.
8. Once rebooted into Safe Mode, open the program again. When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
9. A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
10. Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:
10 - Remove Policies Set By Infection
14 - Remove Temp Files
17 - Repair Windows Updates

11. Ensure the Restart check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.

12. Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.

When all that completes, try checking for updates again. This will take much longer than usual.
Pick one update to install. If the update fails attach CBS.log, include the KB# and error code.

Windows Update KB890830 failed. There is no information in Windows Update. See attached CBS.zip
It failed during configuring windows around 96%

Sorry about that.
I'd like to see if SFC finds any problems.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

I would like to wait some time before upgrading.

What does error 80070005 mean? All updates failed with the same errorcode.

8008005 usually means access denied.

Check for updates again, then pick one to install.
If it fails, zip and attach CBS.log

two updates installed successfully, KB3072305, KB3072630 but reboot still required

two updates failed to install, KB3078071 and KB3046017. The last one was tried to install twice

It seems that the error happened immediatelly after the download. I saw some new directories in "Softwaredistribution/Download" and a few eye shuts later the failed messages was already visible.

CBS.txt is attached

Hi There,

there isn't a File named CBS.persist, only CheckSUR.persist or some Cbspersist.somedate. The later one can't be uploaded, therefor I attached CheckSUR.persist. If you need a different file, give me a note.
Did some reseach on error code 80070005, Google found some identical questions on this topic. At least for some of them, access rights in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistributon\ were the reason.

Zip up and attach the entire CBS folder, there should be some cab files in there that contain older versions of the CBS log.
These logs should contain a record of what is causing the 0x80070005 error during installation :)

Try running chkdsk again, if it asks to schedule it for the next boot let it do that.

Hi there,

chkdsk did again some repair. After reboot installed KB3046017 successfully, which failed a few day ago. :smile9:

Should Windows update switch back from "never search for update" to "automatic installation"?
