You need to use the script file like instructed in my last post. Now it seems that you just ran SFCFix normally.

Sorry about that. Here is the SFCFix.txt

System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't have the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Here is the latest cbs.txt. Looks like the simsun 'stuff' is still there. By the way, what is this simsun. Do I need this chinese font?
Thanks for your patience and persistence in going after this problem

Alright, follow the instructions below please.

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) - Fix mode
Follow the instructions below to execute a fix on your system using FRST, and provide the log in your next reply.
  • Download the right version of FRST for your system:
    • FRST 32-bit
    • FRST 64-bit
      Note: Only the right version will run on your system, the other will throw an error message. So if you don't know what your system's version is, simply download both of them, and the one that works is the one you should be using.
  • Move the executable (FRST.exe or FRST64.exe) on your Desktop;
  • Right-click on your Desktop, select New and click on Text Document. Name it fixlist (make sure it's a .txt file) and press on Enter;
  • Open the file you just created and copy/paste the content below in it, then save it (Ctrl + S);
    Code:
    CloseProcesses:

    C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-font-truetype-simsun_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_fadf752dd10266d5
  • Right-click on the FRST executable and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator (for Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 users);
  • Click on the Fix button;
    NYA5Cbr.png
  • On completion, a message will come up saying that the fix has been completed and it'll open a log in Notepad;
  • Copy and paste its content in your next reply;

Congratulations AURA !! You've done it

SFC /scannow went to 100% after fixing the error/s with tthis message

"Windows RescueProtection found corrupt files and repaired them"

I also ran the cbs.txt log whose link is shown below along with the links to access Fixlog.txt and SFCFix .txt.

Coming back to the original reason for starting this series of posts, I tried to see that, with the SFC fix in, whether the Win-7 will get updated by invoking the MS SP1 update that comes with the package of updates from Microsoft. Well, that did not go through. It gave an error message that the SP1 update could not be done (Error# 80004005)

Incidentally, I have a Win7-SP1 (32 bit) DVD from MS. I had originally tried to boot up with this DVD and reinstall Windows but it would stop after expanding Window files at about 50%. Do you think it would be OK to try and do the same thing again? Or would you suggest some other approach.

Appreciate your help and suggestions. Thanks Again for fixing the SFC issue.

Awesome :) Now, as for your SP1 install, are you trying to install it from Windows Update directly?

Awesome :) Now, as for your SP1 install, are you trying to install it from Windows Update directly?

Yes. I tried it today as an Administrator after disabling MS Security Essentials anti-virus and Malwarebytes. The sequence was after downloading the update files and after creating a restore point it started to install the update, but stopped with the message that the update failed - (Error # 80004005)

I also tried to use my Win7-SP1 (pro) (32 bit) DVD to install the SP1 directly. I booted the computer with the DVD in the drive and attempted to do a clean new installation. It copied the files from the DVD, but after about 30% into the file expansion phase it stopped. Put out a message that the window installation failed due to possible missing or corrupt files

Any ideas as to what I can try next?

SP1 failed to install. Here is what all I did.

Downloaded the windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe. The installation failed.
I downloaded the Windows Update Readiness Tool and installed that. Tried the SP1 update again. It failed and gave an error number #80004005.
I went through the Windows Troubleshooter in the control panel and invoked the "Fix problems with Windows Update" After that was completed I restarted the computer and tried to install the
windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe again. Got the same #80004005 error message again
I did not see any update log that I can forward to you
I ran the SFC /sannow. It completed the scan successfully through 100% and declared that there were no errors. I made the cbs.txt log and uploaded it to dropbox. Its access is as follows

Dropbox - cbs.txt

Hopefully you can get some clues from all this

That error means "Access Denied", so somewhere along the way, the update cannot install because it doesn't have access to something. I don't see traces of failure though in that CBS.log, did you upload it right after the last failure?

Yes , I ceeated the cbs.log immediately after the second attempt following the installation of the readiness tool. In order to make sure I had access I did all that from my Admin user account and also disabled the MS Security Essentials and Malwarebytes.
I noticed that it downloaded the update, created the restore point and went in the install mode for a while before stopping with the error message. I guess that if the access had to be denied it would be denied at the very start of the install phase.

Let's try something, follow the instructions below please.

Windows Repair All-In-One
NOTE: Before following to step below, please disable your Antivirus software or any other real-time security software that you have enabled.
  • Boot in Safe Mode with Networking;
  • Download the portable version of Windows Repair All-In-One;
  • Move the file (archive) on your Desktop, and extract it there;
  • Go in the tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio folder, then Tweaking.com - Windows Repair folder, right-click on Repair_Windows.exe and select Run as Administrator;
  • From there, click on the Next button until you are presented with an Open Repairs button and click on it;
  • Let the Registry back up complete, and move on to the check-list window;
  • Click on the Unselect All button at the bottom, then check the following items:
    • Reset File Permissions - Make sure the C: drive is checked underneat
    • Reset Registry Permissions
  • Once done, click on the Start Repairs button and let the scan execute;
  • If you are being prompted with a Security Warning, allow it to go through;
  • Once the repair is complete, it'll ask you to restart your computer, please do it;

No Luck here. I did the Windows Repair All in one as you outlined above. After that I tried to install the Windows update from the Win7 SP1 windows6.1-KB976932-X86. After downloading it, creating a restore point, it went into the installation phase for about 80% before stopping with the message that the installation was not successful. Error #80004005.

Now what do you think we can do? Do you recommend that I format the hard drive COMPLETELY and then try once more to install Win7-SP1 from either the 32 bit DVD that I have or use a Win-7 SP1 64 bit DVD and try a do a fresh install. Its a pain to install all my applications but I'll do it if that is the last resort.

If you recommend a new install, please tell me the best way to do a detail sector by sector reformat of the hard drive so that I can be sure of really cleaning out any corrupt residuals.

Aura,,Problem Solved!!!

The Repair Install you suggested above did not work either. I had the usual problem as before. i.e. halfway through the installation I would get a message that the update to SP1 failed. As a last resort I booted the computer with the DVD and during the installation I chose to format the HD with the reasoning that any corrupted file or registry that may be stopping the installation will be wiped out and I will do a clean install. Half way through the "files expansion" phase I got an error message saying that the installation could not be done due to an unknown reason. Now I was really stumped. You and I had cleaned up the file system to work flawlessly, the HD was reformatted and I was still unable to either update the Win-7 to a SP1 or do an clean install from a DVD

Then I read in one of the other forums a comment that if the SP1 installation consistently fails then the problem COULD be due to the RAM and motherboard interaction. Particularly if the mobo is 6 or 7 years old. The suggested possible approach was to reduce the RAM capacity, install the OS and then bring the RAM up to the original capacity after everything is running. So I did that. I reduced the RAM from 4GB to 2 GB and the installation sailed through flawlessly. I've brought the RAM up to its original 4GB and am now in the process of adding my applications. My data is on a separate partition and also backed up, so I'm OK there. My mobo is an ASUS P5N E-SLI and has their latest BIOS driver

I am not knowledgeable enough to understand the mechanism of how the RAM and the mobo interact. Maybe somebody at this forum may have an explanation as to why less RAM interacts flawlessly during installation of an OS whereas the higher capacity RAM would hang up, and yet with the higher RAM capacity the OS runs fine and faster during normal operations and other updates.

Anyway Aura, I very much appreciate you sticking with this issue and being very patient in attempting to solve this problem which turned out to have an unexpected solution. Thanks again

Honestly, it's the first time I've heard of a such issue, but I'll be sure to keep that possibility in mind for the future. Glad to know that your issue has been solved n2b, and no problem, you're welcome :)

I 've got a slightly different problem. It used to be that the Windows update would search for downloads and install or would hang up during installation while trying to update to SP1. Now that I have a WIn7 SP1 it finds an error and doesn't get past the search phase. Error No 8007000E. I am told that MS has changed the way Win7 SP1 gets updates. I tried to download the MS Update Catalog for what they call a Convenient Rollup But all I get is a blank blue color page with the logo and nothing else. I am using IE-11 and am logged in as an Administrator. Appreciate your help in this

The Windows Update Catalog website requires you to install an ActiveX object to use it. Were you prompted to install it (should be at the bottom of the page, same position as when you download something).
