[SOLVED] Can't install Defender - 0x80073701 - ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING

Hi Dr M,

sorry for the misunderstanding.
The service "wscsvc" is not available under the services on our other servers (2012R2/2016/2019), but now it is on the respective server, on which I run the Registry-Files you provided us.
I have now attached the screenshots from the entry in the services (screen01.png), this service properties (screen02.png), and the error we got after manually starting it (screen03.png).

Are those the information you need or something else?

Again, sorry for the complication to battle with a foreign language.

Thank you for your suggentions and your help!

Hi, BrewDrew.

I am not ignoring you. I am just waiting for suggestions from other guys here, with more expertise in servers' issues.

Just letting you know, that one of them already suggested re-installing the server, due to the many missing services. But let's wait a bit more, before taking this last step as a solution.

Hi DR M,

I'm sorry for looking impatient - in fact, i thought i haven't posted my last post; but instead it was on the second page.
Are we able to delete duplicate posts?

We hope, that there will be another solution to this problem then reinstalling the server.

Thank you for your suggentions and best regards,

BrewDrew

I'm sorry for looking impatient

Not impatient at all! It's almost a month since you asked for help, so I can understand you, and I wish I could help you more. :)

BrewDrew,

Here is my colleague's suggestion:

Retrieve Components Hive

1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to We transfer and just provide the link here.

Hi DR M,

thank you for your response and sorry for my late reply.
I hope you had a nice christmas weekend.

After internal discussion, we're not sure if it is safe to post the content of this system file to the public.
Interestingly, we haven't found a good read to this subject if it is safe to do so or not.
Maybe you could provide us an interesting read regarding this configuration file?

Once again, sorry for my late replay and for our (maybe exaggerated) caution.

Thank you very much for your help and best regards,

BrewDrew

The COMPONENTS hive doesn't contain any personal information and is a database store for the all the components used by the operating system. The components are just dependencies used by the operating system and while people will have different stores, they're all common files which can be found on a majority of Windows systems.

Here is some good references for you to read:

Manage the Component Store
Restoring a Backup of the COMPONENTS Hive - What are the issues?

Hello DR M,

thank you for your informations!

After reviewing the references about the Component Store, we decided to share the files with you, but want to send them via PM.
Please feel free to share the link with your team.

Thank you so much for your correspondence and your help!

Best regards,
BrewDrew

Hi, BrewDrew.

You are very welcome.

Unfortunately, we can't provide any help through personal messages. Besides, this is not the purpose of a Forum like this.

As I explained to you, there is no personal information in the Components folder. It's up to you, however, what you are going to do.

Hello DR M,

thank you for your patience.

This is the link to the COMPONENTS-File on WeTransfer:
COMPONENTS.zip

Can you please tell us what's wrong with our server and how we can solve the issue with the uninstalled Windows Defender?

Thank you and best regards,

BrewDrew

Please do following:

FRST Registry Search
  1. Click the Start button and choose Control Panel.
  2. In the upper right corner ensure the View by: is set to Category.
  3. Select the Programs group.
  4. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link. This will bring up the Server Manager or Windows Features dialog.
Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep this dialog open while you perform the remaining steps. You can minimize it if you wish but keep it open.
  5. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.

  6. Right-click on the file FRST64.exe and choose Run as administrator.
  7. Copy and paste KB5007192 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
  8. When the scan is complete, a message will display that 'SearchReg.txt' is saved in the same folder FRST was started from. Notepad will open this file also. Close Notepad and attach the file 'SearchReg.txt' to your next reply.
  9. You may close any remaining open windows now.

The following fix might take a few hours to complete. Please be patient.

Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.
  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.

Copy the files C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log and C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log to your desktop.
Zip them and attach the zipped file to your next reply.
