[SOLVED] Confusing and Erratic Windows Update Behaviour

Hi BrainDrab,

I've tried this but it doesn't seem to be an option. It never appears in the usual list of updates that are ready to be downloaded/installed, it just suddenly appears in the Update History as "failed" roughly ten minutes after an update check has finished. Right-clicking it only gives the options "view details" and "copy details".

Hi BrianDrab,

Thanks, I'll try this. How can I make sure windows Update doesn't automatically download/install it again?

Hi BrianDrab,

I've uninstalled KB3035583 and hidden it so that Windows doesn't try to install it again. The "Get Windows 10" icon has disappeared from the toolbar, but the "failed" Upgrade to Windows 10 Home issue is still happening.

Hi BrainDrab,

I ran the FixIt tool in Aggressive mode and then rebooted. After the reboot, a message saying something like "A script is causing your browser to run slowly. Do you want to stop running it?" Despite clicking "No" my system started to run very, very slowly - it took about half and hour to load everything properly. I tried rebooting again but this didn't help. I decided to leave it for a while and eventually things started to run normally again.
I ran a check for updates and the only one it found was KB3035583, which I hid. The "failed" update issue is still there - it attempted to download/install roughly 20 minutes after the initial check. The only difference is now nothing appears in the Update History despite it saying an update has failed. I assume it's the same Windows 10 one as before, but can't be sure since it no longer displays it in the History. There seems to be a lot of activity during and after the update attempts to install - computer usage goes up and the router lights flicker a lot more than usual even though it never successfully installs.

OK, let's remove the scheduled tasks and the download folder and you should be set.

1. Click your start button and type tasks in the search box.
2. Click on the Schedule Tasks item that appears in the search results.
3. You should now be in the Task Scheduler. Expand Task Scheduler Library....Microsoft...Windows...Setup...gwx
4. Within gwx right-click on each task and disable it. Repeat this for the GWXTriggers folder as well.

Then, show hidden files and delete the following folder.
C:\$Windows.~BT

Let me know if this works or if you have any questions on these steps.

Hi BrianDrab,

Thanks for the advice. My gwx folder seems to be empty. I couldn't find any tasks listed under it, and the white status bars at the top of the scheduled tasks screen is blank. I couldn't see GWXTriggers either.
I couldn't find C:\$Windows.~BT as I wasn't sure how to activate the "show hidden folders" option - is it the same option as the one listed in the Control Panel?

Hi BrianDrab,

Thanks. Just to be sure, this is the folder that needs deleting?

FileScreenShot.jpg

When checking its properties, its size, file and folder number seem to increase gradually all the time - is this normal?

Thanks BrianDrab.

Every time I try to delete this folder I get a "You need Administrative permissions to delete this folder". I'm already logged in as Admin. How do I stop it displaying this message?
The file's huge - over 20, 000 items. How long is it likely to take to delete?

Thanks BrianDrab,

Disk Cleanup found "Temporary Windows Installation Files" but no "Previous Windows Installation(s)" file. Should I delete the Temporary Windows Installations file? I'm not sure which of these contains the $Windows.~BT.
I'll run the Disk Cleanup tool tomorrow as I have to log off for now - thanks in advance.

Thanks BrianDrab.

Before I run Disk Cleanup, is there any chance of removing something important by deleting the Temporary Windows Installation file?

Hi BrianDrab,

I've run Disk Cleanup and removed the Temporary Windows Installation file and the $Windows.~BT file has gone from the C drive. I ran an update check, and ten minutes later the sane old "failed" Upgrade to Windows 10 update appeared in Windows Update History. :confused2:

Hi BrianDrab,

I can't find $Windows.~BT manually in the C drive and it isn't visible in the folders list even with "show hidden folders and files" still checked, so it looks as though it's gone.
