[SOLVED] Confusing and Erratic Windows Update Behaviour

Good. So there's no way it could be trying to install so the system must be confused. Now that we have the update uninstalled that downloads the files and the files are no longer there, let's reset windows updates one more time.

Reset Windows Updates by running the FixIt from the following link Make certain to select Aggressive mode so it clears out the existing downloads.
https://techpaul.wordpress.com/2011/...broken-fix-it/

Hi BrianDrab,

Thanks, I'll run the FixIt tomorrow and let you know what happens. If it requires a reboot after running, is it likely to cause a lot of slow-down like it did last time?

If it requires a reboot after running, is it likely to cause a lot of slow-down like it did last time?

Yes, it could because it is looking at all of your updates that are installed to see what is required. It's odd though if it's very slow as it usually runs in the background and doesn't impact performance too much.

Thanks BrianDrab.

Looking back, it actually completed the fixes pretty quickly. It was only after the required reboot that things started running slowly. I don't know if the FixIt continues to work after the reboot or not, but I found the "a running script is causing your browser to run slowly" message odd as I wasn't using a browser at the time.

The fix-it doesn't continue working after the reboot but Windows Update does. It kicks in and rebuilds its entire cache which is what is taking time.

Hi BrianDrab,

I ran the FixIt again in Aggressive mode, rebooted and ran a check for updates. Interestingly, there was no slow down this time. After the initial check, Update found only KB3035583, which I hid again. Ten minutes later the "failed" update returned, but isn't listed in the update history. I've checked the C drive and $Windows.~BT has recreated itself. It definitely wasn't there before I ran the FixIt.

I've checked with some colleagues and this is very odd. Let's change your Windows Update settings temporarily so the updates don't install automatically.

1. Click your Start button and type Windows Update
2. Click on the Windows Update link that appears in the search results.
3. Click the Change Settings link
4. Change the drop-down from "Install updates automatically (recommended)" to "Never check for updates (not recommended)" and then click OK.
5. Now click Check for updates.
6. Let's see if the "Upgrade to Windows 10 Home" update shows up in the normal list of updates. Then we can right-click on it and hide it.

Let me know please.

Hi BrianDrab,

Checking for updates after switching to "Never check for updates" doesn't seem to cause anything to appear in the normal updates list, failed or otherwise.
Oddly, in the last hour or so, Windows Update was working very hard in the background "downloading" something that took ages to download. It finally finished around half and hour ago, but nothing is showing up in the history.
Despite nothing showing up in the history, I wonder if the large download was "Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. driver update for AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series", as I had an almost identical experience three weeks ago where Update tried to download and install three of these, all of which failed. Thankfully it only tried the once. I have no idea why it's trying to do this again - possibly because the $Windows.~BT recreated itself (assuming this last update is linked to Windows 10)?

This might be totally irrelevant, but just a thought. Before Windows 10 was released I had difficulty getting the "Windows 10" icon to appear in my toolbar. After asking for advice on a forum, I was told I needed to have "opted-in" to the MS Customer Experience Improvement Program. Doing this caused the Windows 10 icon to appear after a reboot. Would "opting out" from this stop any of the 10-related updates?

Hi BrianDrab,

It's odd. The Windows 10 update still tries to install and fails if Windows Update is set either "automatically download/install updates" or "download but let me choose whether to install" is selected, but nothing happens if Windows Update is set to either "Never check for updates" or "Let me choose whether to download/install updates".

That actually makes sense. Please do the following.

Identify Scheduled Tasks
1. Click your start button and type cmd in the search box.
2. Right-click on cmd that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator. Answer Yes to the UAC prompt if it appears.
3. Copy/Paste the following into the command-prompt window and hit enter.
schtasks /query /fo CSV|Findstr /v "^"TaskName".*$">tasklist.txt && notepad tasklist.txt

4. Notepad will open showing all of your scheduled tasks. Can you copy and paste this into your next reply?

Thank you.

OK, let's check your Windows Update settings.

Step#1 - Export WU Info

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\
  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file WU (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  7. Please zip and attach this file.

Thank you.

Hi BrianDrab,

Not sure if I'm doing something wrong but I can't find the registry key. I can get as far as CurrentVersion but there's no WindowsUpdate file inside, only Explorer and Browser Helper Objects.

That would be very bad if that's the case. Let's try the following instead.

1. Click your start button and type cmd in the search box.
2. Right-click on cmd that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator. Answer Yes to the UAC prompt if it appears.
3. Copy/Paste the following into the command-prompt window and hit enter.
reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate /s >1.txt && notepad 1.txt

4. Notepad will open showing the WU info. Can you copy and paste this into your next reply?

Thank you.

Finally I think we found the culprit. If this doesn't work then there is one more thing we can do that should work.
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade
[COLOR=#ff0000]KickoffDownload    [/COLOR]REG_DWORD    [COLOR=#ff0000]0x1[/COLOR]

1. Click your start button and type cmd in the search box.
2. Right-click on cmd that comes up in the search results and select Run as administrator. Answer Yes to the UAC prompt if it appears.
3. Copy/Paste the following into the command-prompt window and hit enter.
reg add HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade /v KickoffDownload /t reg_dword /d 0

4. In the command-prompt window it should say "The operation completed successfully."

Let me know if this works.

Hi BrianDrab,

When I pasted the above into command prompt, it asked if it's okay to overwrite the existing Kickoff Download. Should I put Yes?
