corrupt manifests, windows update won't work, now apphelp.dll is bad?

OK, tried that. I ran it in "automatic mode" and then rebooted.

Post-reboot I selected only the one update from the Windows Update list and it failed again. Code: 8024200D

To see if there is any difference, please download the update and try to install from the downloaded file.

That appears to have worked. It says it installed and I need to restart for the update to take effect.

That worked too. One thing I noticed is everytime I search for the KB to download it seems to hit the page for Win7 x86 downloads. I have to explicitly go find the x64 version. Could there be something misconfigured in Windows Update where it's trying to download the wrong version of these updates and that's why they're now failing???

Anyway, I installed KB3046002 now. Next?

No, not at all. The issue you are having is common after fixing corruption. I think you just need to download and install the remaining updates that you have and then all future updates should install automatically. Give it a try and let me know. I think you have 6 to 8 more I believe. Thanks.

That's about right. Do I have to reboot between each one? IIRC, Windows Update won't let you install more updates until you reboot, but I don't know if we can batch them into one transaction or something so I can run them all at once? Or do we not want to "tempt fate"?

OK, all of them appear to have installed successfully.

Now how do we figure out whether future Windows Updates will work?

BTW: Do not let me sound ungrateful! You have been absolutely incredible helping me though this!!!

I've never had an instance yet where they didn't. New updates come up the 2nd Tuesday of every month. So I would say that let's wait until July 8th.....they should install that evening automatically. If not you can come back here and we'll take a look. Sound good?

Should I maybe try one of the "Optional Updates" that are still listed (I would have to see which ones don't really mean that much to me)?

Sure! How many optional updates are there? If the optional updates were available to install before the corruption we may run into the same thing but it's worth a shot.

Let's just try one first.

I'm pretty sure most, if not all, of them were present before this happened.

Do I risk screwing things up for the future by attempting to see if one will d/l and install via the online Windows Update? Or is it just that we could prove-out that these particular ones will never work properly via the online installer, but future ones that were never registered as waiting should be fine?

It worked! It downloaded and installed KB3050265! (That's some kind of update to Windows Update Client, so I thought it might even be appropriate to install.)

The road to recovery was long and bumpy, but (knock on wood) I think you did it!
