Nope, we need to run a new SFC scan to see if the replacements are accepted :) When we replace payload files, we need to run SFC to the links can be made/repaired.

System File Checker (SFC)
Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code:
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't have the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

Just wanted to add please let me know if you think I am fixed or if you want me to run another SURT. Thanks Aura!:smile9:

In that case, you are good to go :) Was there anything else you needed help with regarding Windows Updates and/or system files?

Fantastic and thank you again! You've been a tremendous help. At this point, my WU is running correctly and that was my biggest concern so I think I'm OK!

Just one last question which may or may not be related to some of the corrupted files I had...my Windows Media Player 12 has been playing a little choppy so I've run the Microsoft Fix It WMP Troubleshooter and each time (including just now) it detects corruption; specifically, scripting registration corruption and corrupted network streaming settings. Each time it says to have corrected the errors yet the same errors keep coming back. Other than the occasional choppiness WMP plays pretty much fine.

Do you think those are false positives?

I don't have a lot of experience with Windows Media Player sadly so I cannot say. I've never used it as a main media player, I've always used VLC media player. Personally, I feel like the settings it corrects are either reset on application closure or something else changes them, hence why the troubleshooter reports that :)

Hi Aura,

Well, I think I was fixed for a while then WU stopped offering updates. Still no corruption per sfc /scannow but CheckSUR found one error:

Checking Component Store
(f) CSI Missing Winning Component Key 0x00000000 x86_microsoft-windows-a..rience-program-data_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.19010_none_736b83e9e14e7f43

Could you assist? Thanks again.

Hi Joe :)

Sadly I don't have that key on that VM, let's see if we can find the update it's coming from.

  • Let me know if the update was found or not;

It didn't find the update.

I Googled that update and if I understand correctly, that's the Windows 10 "nagware" update? Is not having this update what's been causing my WU issues?

Thanks

Your Registry key is part of an update associated with Windows 10, yes. I've seen reports of people having issues with Windows Updates because of these, but there's no conclusive proofs of that.

Also, what kind of issues are you having right now with Windows Updates?

When I check my event viewer I see a lot of errors about "change in health status" and "an update was detected." Even though it says update was detected, when I click "check for updates" no updates are provided. Also, on the "change settings" option of WU, I lost several of the checkbox options; the only ones I have now are "who can install updates" and "recommended updates."

Can you provide me a screenshot of the "Change settings" window so I can see what you're referring to? Also, can you copy/paste a few errors from your Event Viewer here with the full error message?
