The following might take several hours to complete. You can do it overnight if you like.

Click on Start - All Programs - Accessories.
Right-click on Command-prompt and select Run as administrator.
When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter afterwards.

Code:
chkdsk c: /f
At the question "Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)", press Y.
Restart the system.

Do not press any key during the restart. This will allow CHKDSK to start.
Wait for this to complete. Please note that this may take several hours. Let it run even if it looks like the process has stopped!

It seems you did not run Windows in the Recovery Environment.

Should these files be appearing in file explorer? I could only find amd64_microsoft-windows-i..onal-codepage-54936_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.16384_none_cbb9a66113a67013 there.

How do I run windows in the recovery environment? I wasn't aware I was supposed to. What exactly does that involve?

Please read the instructions I give in message #54 (number 2 & 3).

Sorry, I missed that the first time around. When I hit restart while pressing the shift key I am given a set of options before the computer actually restarts. Which of these am I supposed to choose? System Restore? System Image Recovery? Startup Repair? Startup Settings? Command Prompt? Reset Your PC? Refresh Your PC?
