Alright. Now, how are you trying to upgrade via Windows 10? Using the Windows Update, or the Media Creation Tool?

I tried both methods. Both methods failed. With Windows Update, I got 0x80070003. I didn't know where to find the error code with the Media Creation Tool. Windows Update just popped up showing that I have KB2976978, KB3053343, KB3075853, in addition to the Upgrade to Windows 10 to install. I had all of them installed previously, but I had uninstalled KB3053343.

    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the commands below one at the time (press Enter to send it);
    • net stop wuauserv
    • ren %SystemRoot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download DL.bak
    • net start wuauserv
    • wuauclt.exe /updatenow
    This will trigger the Windows 10 upgrade download via Windows Update (if you go in the Windows Update panel, you'll see it). Now, if the installation fails, reply here with the error code, and the download links to the two files below for me.

    C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Ok. Just to notify you that my Internet is abysmally slow. If I start it now, it won't be finished for another few hours, probably not until tomorrow. I really don't know why the update files get deleted completely and have to start from scratch each time. Anyway will do.

Question, the other updates, namely the ones that Microsoft said were necessary to update to Windows 10 (KB2976978, KB3075853). Should I install them also, or should I ignore them and just try to install the upgrade?

I would install both of them before trying to install Windows 10. If they fail, we'll make them work.

Same thing as above. If the updates fails to install, upload the two files below for me to review.

C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

When does the upgrade fails exactly? When you check for the Windows 10 upgrade? When it downloads it? When it verify the package? Does it fails during the installation?

It fails during the installation. It had finished downloading all the updates and it was still booted up. I guess you can say the first phase before any of it's promised several restarts. It reached maybe about 22% and then a message popped up saying that it failed and then it threw me back to my Windows 8.1 environment.

And the error code is the same as the one in the thread title?

It mysteriously simply said that 'Something happened'. The error in the thread title was what I'd gotten from the log file. Unfortunately I can't remember all the details.

Did it look like this?
