Failure when trying to upgrade to Windows 10 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017

That's progress. :-)

Please do the following:

Just check SMART Status for now!

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to check your SMART status with GSmartControl:

  • Download the portable version of GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the zip file to your Desktop. Open the folder gsmartcontrol-1.1.3-win64 which should be located on your Desktop and double-click gsmartcontrol.exe to launch the program.
  • Identify your drive in the list (if recognized by the tool), and hover your mouse over it.
  • You should see something called: SMART status. It will either read: Enabled, in which case you should do the following:
  • Double-click on it to bring up its window (usually you'll find your drive by its size or its brand name);
  • Go to the Self-Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply or take a screenshot;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply;
  • Please note: If the SMART Status reads: Unsupported, stop and let me know.

Ok, did that, but unfortunately it failed again. This time we're back to this error, as seen in earlier attempts:
0xC1900101 - 0x40017
The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during BOOT operation

Are we at the point where we give up, and just format the drive and fresh install Windows 10?

This machine is important to us as its the only PC we have that has all of the Adobe apps on it. So today I was forced to reinstall Trend Micro security and the Epson printer and scanner drivers temporarily so we could get some work done on it. I don't think either of those two things are the problem anyway.
See latest FRST logs attached.

We need to find a time when you won't need the machine, so we can unplug it, remove TM and network and unplug it to try + do it from a test user profile.

I'm hoping to be able to try this on Thursday afternoon, Australian Eastern Standard Time

Today I uninstalled Trend Micro again, disconnected the PC from the domain and set back to WORKGROUP, rebooted and then logged in with a new Local Administrator account. I then unplugged the network cable and tried the Windows 10 upgrade again.

I'm running the upgrade from a folder on the C: drive "C:\Win10_1909" that contains a copy of the full ISO.

It still failed, but this time with the following error:
0xC1900101 - 0x20017
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation

Any other ideas?

Within the next 30mins I will need to reconnect it to the domain and reinstall the Trend Micro, ready for use tomorrow, so if you have any idea's before I do that please let me know.

Thank you!

Do not reinstall anything while we troubleshoot. Especially not Trend Micro as it has kernel drivers.

Please do the following:

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download the attached fixlist.txt and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Afterwards, reboot and retry the upgrade.
