[SOLVED] First Post - Windows 7 Update Failure

Step 1:
Warning: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Do not run this script on another machine.
  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.

Step 2:
Restart the computer.
Check Windows Update again and report the result. Do not install any updates.
Copy the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log to your desktop.
Zip the copied file and attach the zipped cbs.log to your next reply.

Restart went fine. CBS file is attached. The same five important updates are showing (see last screen shot).

Great. Try to install KB4534310 ones again and report the result.

I just noticed that all my print devices are gone. Looks like something happened with the last attempt to install KB4534310. At this point I don't think I can mess things up any more with another attempt.

I wanted to finish some work and print it but I can't. I'm going to see if I can get this printed first, then try the installer.

I can't even get the printer connected by reinstalling with the HP software so something new is messed up. I'll proceed with the update.

I'm beginning to think were are testing the definition of insanity. This is the 6th time for KB4534310 and the end result is the same. The installation requires a restart. Prior to shutdown the windows installation starts and gets to 30%, then it shuts down. Upon restart it goes into system repair and probably uninstalls (or attempts to) KB4534310. Eventually it restarts and the same five important updates are listed.

The only difference I can tell is since the 5th attempt my printing services have ceased to work. Not being able to print is a big deal since I makes the system almost useless. Hopefully there is some logic behind the continued attempts with KB4534310.

Unfortunately the install failure isn't known. Sometimes multiple attempts succeed.
Prior to the last attempt we cleaned the registry related to KB4534310 but that didn't help either.

Best to use the latest system image now to get the printer issue solved as soon as possible.

Bad news. The system image also has the same printer problem. I only have one earlier image that I can try. If it has the same problem then I'm not sure what to do. If I can't print then this computer is a write off. It's really too bad because it's my go-to computer.

I restored from my oldest system image last night and have restored printing. This is the image created before Message #1,116.

This puts us back quite a ways and I'd speculate that the KB4534310 install attempts compromised printing.

Perform the instructions in message #1,123 again.
If the printer still works normally, perform the instructions in message #1,125 again.
Check the printer afterwards again.

Both updates installed successfully. I restarted after each and checked the printer. Printer is good.

I'll do the system image tonight. I'm going to keep the older system image with working printers until we confirm a later image with working printers.

Okay.
Since we get stuck on KB4534310 and there aren't much updates afterwards my plan is to get the updates installed until message #1,167 and then finish this thread. I think we can't do much more.

New image created. Update from Message #1,172 done and printers still working.

FYI, I'm restarting after each update.

It looks like I'm now at Message #1,137. And we are not going to try KB4534310 again, right.

Update from Message #1,141 is complete. Printers are still good. So far it's still pointing to KB4534310 as the update that breaks the computer.

I'm now at Message #1,148 and the SFCfix. What do you want me to do next?

KB4555449 installed successfully. It looks like everything else is related to KB4534310.

What about KB4493132 and KB4567409 from the important updates? The other two are .NET Framework, which we installed with Message #1,131 (ndp48), and KB4534310.

KB4493132 is an update telling you Windows 7 reached the End-Of-Life state. Not needed.
KB4567409 is an update to install Microsoft Edge, the successor of Internet Explorer 11. Not really needed too.
