[SOLVED] I can't further update Windows 8.1, I'm stuck on KB3000850 and...

The cbs.log looks clean.

Install Update with DISM
  1. Download the update MSU here: https://download.microsoft.com/down...B1F-DA2C7EAEE35B/Windows8.1-KB3000850-x64.msu
  2. Copy the MSU file to a convenient location (such as C:\temp).
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  5. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    cd C:\temp
replace C:\temp with your path if different

    expand Windows8.1-KB3000850-x64.msu -f:* C:\temp

    DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\temp\Windows8.1-KB3000850-x64.cab

  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Make sure to allow the computer to restart if prompted.
  7. If you receive any other message:
Post a screenshot of the Commandprompt window.
Zip and attach the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

There was a problem unfortunately. The first error is irrelevant, there was an extra space in the command. I found that and removed it.

The other error I'm unsure of. I included the pic you requested in case of a problem...

Attach the files C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log and C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\Dism.log.

Here are the new files. Let me know at any point if being offline will impact one of these steps. The computer itself no longer has access to the internet, I'm downloading and copying everything back and forth with my phone which has unlimited data. This also means that FRST64 is no longer being updated. In two weeks I'll have access to my ISP again....

Which anti-virus program is installed ?
Disable the real time-protection of your AV program.
Perform the instructions in message #22 again and report the result.
Re-enable the real time-protection.

I figured that I had no activated anti-virus program because it's an old laptop with a fresh install of Windows but apparently it has MaCafee as part of the laptops bloatware and the real-time protection works without a subscription. I turned that off and it now says that the update was successful. Thank you!

Should other updates work now or was this fix strictly for KB3000850? If so should I update the same way by manually downloading packages then expanding and updating them through an elevated Command Prompt?

I turned that off and it now says that the update was successful.
Great.
Try to install the "Net Framework 4.8" also.

If you consider upgrading this Windows 8.1 to Windows 10/11 I would uninstall McAfee first, then try the upgrade.

I'll definitely try the update soon and let you know how it goes. Before I do, would you have any recommendations on how I should update?

Does it matter whether or not I use the windows updater, click on a downloaded package, or expand and install new packages using the command prompt like we did before?

Also, should I create another thread if I run into trouble down the road with another update?

You can install the .NET Framework update through Windows Update.

Also, should I create another thread if I run into trouble down the road with another update?
No, that is not needed as it is the same machine.

Sorry, I should have left out a mention of Windows Update. I still wont have internet for over a week so I think the Windows updater is useless for now. I can, however, download packages on my phone using data and then transfer them to my laptop.

I actually already have a couple packages I downloaded that should both be Net Framework 4.8 for Windows 8.1 (64 bit). They also have "kb4486105" in the name but other than that, they have longer names from the one in the Windows updater. So basically, I don't want to confuse the updater by using one of these packages and Windows updater still expecting to update a version of Net Framework 4.8 with the same name.

To not ramble too much and simplify this...

If you have a source for the appropriate Net Framework file, it'd help give me some peace of mind.

Also, would it matter if I just clicked on the update files at this point with the GUI and run as administrator or do I still need to go through the process of using the Command Prompt as we did before?

You can use DISM also to install an update. Which KB do you want to install ?

For now I suppose I'll start with Net Framework 4.8 (kb4486105). The version that Windows update has been calling for specifically. Unfortunately the ones Ive already downloaded are named differently than the one in the updater, (see picture). So I'm not entirely sure they're the right ones to use.

If not, any link to the appropriate (kb4486105) would be appreciated.

The forth one from the top in your screenshot looks the right one.
Or use these instructions:

Install Update with DISM
  1. Download the update MSU here: https://catalog.s.download.windowsu..._1cba02a8aec5034da82cb2dca744648bc4a4eaef.msu
  2. Copy the MSU file to a convenient location (such as C:\temp).
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  5. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    cd C:\temp
replace C:\temp with your path if different

    expand windows8.1-kb4486105-x64_1cba02a8aec5034da82cb2dca744648bc4a4eaef.msu -f:* C:\temp

    DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\temp\windows8.1-kb4486105-x64.cab

  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Make sure to allow the computer to restart if prompted.
  7. If you receive any other message:
Post a screenshot of the Commandprompt window.
Zip and attach the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

It looks like this update also ran into a naming conflict error unfortunately...

Did you disable the antivirus real-time protection ?
If not, do so and try again.

The free subscription period for McAfee expired before I tried that update so I figured that it wasn't active anymore. However, the update worked after deleting McAfee altogether so it must have still been running in the background.

I'm probably going to install Avast soon as a replacement antivirus but will make sure the real time protection is off when I update in the future. Right now everything looks fine and appears to have worked so I'm going to try more updates soon. (y)

I'm not sure which updates would be next in line though without looking at Windows updater. I still have to wait until next Monday to have full internet again but since the laptop is now picking up on my phones hotspot, I can at least restart the computer, connect it to hotspot, and see which updates Windows updater recommends now.

My hotspot is very limited on data though so I wouldn't be able to use it to get anymore than a gigs worth of updates. Hopefully there aren't too many important updates left at this point.

If it's okay, I'll just leave this thread open for now and let you know what happens when I try to do more updates again, that should be within the next couple days.

No problem. We'll wait for your next reply in this thread.

A couple minor updates seemed to have worked fine, so no new problems apart from the Windows updater telling me that Net Framework 3.5 is now one of the important updates. Given we already installed 4.8 this confuses me because I thought the updater worked in a linear fashion. I was under the impression that it started with older updates and works up to the last updates that were released for Win 8.1.

With that said, I'm a bit anxious that Windows updater will attempt to overwrite a newer update with an older one and I wouldn't catch it. I verified that the computer does already have Net Framework 4.8 and 3.5 (see the picture) so I don't know why it'd still list that as an important update.

____________________________

None of this would matter if I knew how many important updates are remaining that are necessary to get my computer up to date, I'm willing to download and install them manually if there aren't too many left and I knew what they were. Do you know if there are any of the large rolling updates left after KB3000850? Or high priority security or functionality updates left?

I did a lot of updates prior to when I hit the dead end at KB3000850, so I was hoping to be close to being up to date now. Right now Windows updater isn't showing any important updates other than Net Framework 3.5 and I'm unsure if I'd need to update that to see newer updates.

It does but .NET Framework 3.5 and .NET Framework 4.8 are different versions. An update for 3.5 does not conflict with 4.8 or vice-versa.

Yes, there are newer updates than KB3000850 as it was released in November 2014.

Right now Windows updater isn't showing any important updates other than Net Framework 3.5
Which update is that ?
