[SOLVED] I can't further update Windows 8.1, I'm stuck on KB3000850 and...

Looking at it again, it's actually a security update for Net Framework 3.5 (KB2966826).

Thanks for the info on your end as well, since it isn't an issue, I suppose I'll just run with that update through the updater. My guess is that the updater will show more updates after I run this one or after a couple restarts perhaps. I'll be back at my apartment in a couple days now to be able to actually sit with the computer for longer periods and I should have full internet access as well. I can continue with updates then and just let you know if I run into any problems as long as this thread is okay to sit idle until Monday or Tuesday.

I did that and a handful of small "important updates" appeared. I let the updater install those which worked but it took a full day and a couple computer reboots for anything to show back up in the updater. KB2267602 is the one I'm on now, the updater says it installed but it keeps showing back up. I tried to clear it out of the updater by installing again and it still shows right back up after installing so I'm not making any progress at this point. (See picture for latest updates)

The good news is that each update appears to be installing. The bad news is that, at this rate, a couple months will pass and I still wont have the computer fully updated.

Do you know if there's a way to speed up the updaters discovery process or things that might slow it down? I'm on a VPN, I'm not sure if that matters.
Alternatively, having a chronological list of the important updates would be helpful unless you're willing to give recommendations on what's essential going forward because I could just download and install them manually.

KB2267602 is a definition-update for Windows Defender. This update is re-offered but with a newer version number. This is normal.

Which security software is installed ?
Disabling the real-time protection while installing the updates might speed up the process.

Sorry, not sure why the picture didn't upload before, I'll try again.

For some reason it was actually saying they were all the same version or at least they had the same version number. Version "1.397.4.0" appeared 2 more times after installing it. Perhaps they mislabeled a couple of updates, I'm not sure.

Thankfully I now see version "1.397.59.0" so I'll continue with updates and jump back in here to let you know how it goes after a few rounds of updates. (y) Also, I have no virus program installed at this point so no real time protection exist for now unless the built in Windows firewall blocks Windows own updates.

Okay.

Windows update doesn't seem to be doing much. It took a week to roll out two small updates for Microsoft Defender. Just to confirm, you were saying that my computer is still missing many newer updates, correct? The last large cumulative update was KB3000850 which you helped get working. As you said, It's from 2014 but there appears to have been a much more recent republishing of it here...

Download Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB3000850) from Official Microsoft Download Center

Coincidently, this republishing of KB3000850 on the Microsoft website happened very recently and also showed up in the updater around the same time. So, I'm wondering if Windows updater doesn't show an update until Microsoft decides to republish it. In other words, if KB3000850 was recently published on Microsoft's website and coincidently was recently available for updating through the updater as well, is there a link between the two? I also noticed that one of the Microsoft Defender updates said it was published 2 days before it showed up in the updater. I found this out by clicking on the "details" for that particular update.

In short, will I have to wait weeks or months for Microsoft to relist other updates in the updater to get them?

The problem for me is that I wanted to make an image of my hard drive after I get Windows updated but don't to wait 6 months for Windows to be fully updated. I also don't want to get heavily invested in using a version of Windows 8.1 that's missing key features or isn't operating as smoothly as it could.

Open the list with installed updates. Provide 3 screenshots starting from the top of the list.

Here's a zip of the pictures you wanted. If you only want to look at the 3 most recent pages, the pic that's labeled "Updates 1 (top)" are the most recent updates followed by updates 2 and 3.

However, I did include older updates going back to the beginning as well so you can see how many updates have been done total. There's 9 pages of updates, so a lot. I don't know if many of these were updated when I installed Windows back in June. I certainly don't remember sitting through that many updates although it's possible, it's been a while. Either way, some of these updates may have had release dates that are more recent than KB300850. So perhaps we're further along in the process than we were thinking and that's why Windows is barely showing me updates at this point.

I'm not sure, so let me know what you think on that. If there are still more important updates remaining, I'm willing to install them but would just want to know why it's going so slowly and if I can manually update from here if the updater continues at turtle speed.

Thanks for the screenshots. Newer updates are successful installed, i.e. Servicing Stack Updates and .NET Framework updates.
All seems normal.
Windows 8.1 has reached the end-of-life on January 10, 2023 meaning it is no longer updated.

Thanks for your help, I'll mark this as solved and return to the website in the future if something else pops up (y)

Your welcome.

Take care.
