Internet drops on irregular basis

OK... we now know that user profile corruption is very likely not the problem. Please be sure to re-hide the Hidden Admin User Account.

I didn't mention that BT would cause the internet drop. I only suggested that both dropped out. And that this is interesting to know.
I understood what you meant at the time you posted it. It is interesting to know and made me wonder if one was connected to the other.

Then I started to thinking about the fact that Intel's wifi update includes Bluetooth update as well (I know that you don't have Intel and I do not know if Atheros works the same way) and that's when I began wondering if your BT frequency was somehow interfering with your wifi.

Does the wifi drop if the BT headphones ARE NOT connected?

Please be sure to try the Ethernet connection.

p.s. You also want to try bringing the laptop closer to the router - like right next to it and see if the wifi drops.

HI again,
Yes, internet drops too even if BT headphones are not connected.
It was only since yesterday that I noticed for the first time that they both dropped together when I was watching a YouTube vid.
I could try to disable BT in settings on my laptop and see if drops are still happening. Is that ok to test first?
If drops still occur I will test the ethernet cable.

@jcgriff2
update:
Before attaching to an ethernet cable i did : in this order :
BT OFF : internet drops
Avast OFF : keeps dropping
Windows defender/Firewall OFF : keeps dropping

When I had a last drop, I opened Network troubleshooting and I attached it here.

The next thing to test after Ethernet is to move the laptop closer to the router - very close, like right beside it.

Well, there's no doubt then that the problem is not related to your wifi signal.

In order to isolate and confirm that the problem is undoubtedly your internal wifi (versus router or other issue), the only thing that I can think to do now is for you to obtain (buy) a USB wifi, install it (drivers) and see if it stays connected. You could then return the USB wifi to the retail store after the test.

If you do this, get fresh drivers online from the USB-wifi manufacturer online as the drivers that come burned on a CD are usually old/out-dated.

What router do you have? I don't mean the brand or model, but where did you get it from? Did you buy it or do you lease it/get it free from your cable company or FIOS or other Internet provider?

How old is your laptop? (Sorry if I asked this already)

I have a USB wifi adapter that I can use. No problem. Also the router is a free one from the cable company. Laptop is about 6 months.

But first I have to mention that when I have a drop I run the troubleshoot that is popping up on my browser. It says ''windows can't communicate with the device or resource (primary DNS server) - see picture attached.
But as soon as I ran this troubleshoot, a sec later the internet is back up again from itself. Can this info be of some assistance ?

I get that same message at home when my wifi Internet occasionally goes down (once every few weeks).

How old is the router from the cable company?

I'm on my 3rd router in less than 2 years - all wifi problems.

I'm running a wifi USB adapter now for almost a full day and not a single drop. I guess the one in my laptop is broken ?
Because when I had a drop before my other devices still kept working on the same router/modem.

ps: my router is a couple of months now (but i guess my main problem is my wifi in my laptop right ?

Yes - you've now definitely isolated it to your laptop's internal wifi.

The only remaining thing to do here would be to reinstall Windows and see if that helps.

I will buy another wifi adapter QCA9377 soon. On ebay their cheap I guess and it would spare me the hassle to let the laptop been pickuped, repaired and brought back, perhaps in a state where all my data, programs and VM are gone.
I'm not going to risk that for 10 $. That's what I believe they cost atm.
I am greatfull for all the help you gave and I will give an update when I replaced the adapter.
For now my USB one will do ;)
Thnx !

Hi,

Before updating drivers I would make sure they are made for the exact wireless card you have because if not some times they will install but then will not work properly!

  1. Press
    windows8_key.png
+ X to access the Menu and click Device Manager
  2. expand the Network Adapters
  3. right click the Wireless card adapter (Qualcomm Atheros... in your case)
  4. click Properties > Tab Details > On the Property box select Hardware Ids
  5. right click the text to Copy & then Paste the values on the box of your Reply

Yes (y) the driver in your link matches the hardware ID so it should work unless it have bugs!
Installed the latest driver 12.0.0.827 and thought I had an improvement after being working ok for 6h without a drop BUT unfortunately had another drop now :(
Question : i'm working on 2.4GHz. Would it make a difference that I change to 5GHz to test ? Could that be of any influence on internet drops?

Btw, i found a thread that mentioned internet problems too ( in french ) : https://www.culture-informatique.ne...robleme-wifi-qualcomm-atheros-qca9377-resolu/
He installed these drivers from Lenovo and the problem back then was solved : https://support.lenovo.com/fr/fr/downloads/ds119140
Can you check if this type of driver would be fit for my adapter's hardware ID pls ? So i can try these drivers as a last resort before buying a new one...
