Good evening folks! I have run into some trouble installing the Windows Server Backup feature on a Server 2016 Standard install (bare metal and not vm). I don't actually need this feature, rather I just wanted to test it for another server. Anyway, the server complained about needing an alternate path. I tried using the install media I used and that did not work. I also tried an identical install (same version, same hardware) and that did not work. I normally use WSUS but I currently have it disabled on this server as part of the troubleshooting process.

I ran "sfc /scannow" and "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth". I found KB4598243 mentioned a number of times in the CBS log. I then ran SFCFix and no errors were found. I used FRST64 to do a search for KB4598243 and found number mentions of it in that log. I also ran the ComponentScanner.

I am attaching the logs in hopes that someone has a suggestion. Thanks!

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Follow these instructions to remove an update.
  • Open the Start menu of Windows and type the command CMD
  • When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, then press enter.
Code:
wusa /uninstall /KB:4598243
  • Let me know if it says it was successful or you get the message: The update KB4598243 is not installed on this computer.

Good morning and thank you for the assistance! I meant to say in my original post that I did try to remove it and the update could not be found. I ran the uninstall again and I am including a screenshot of the error removing it.

Hi,

I wanted to make sure that you could not remove this update, it seems your SearchReg in post#1 is complete and the COMPONENTS hive was loaded. So here's the next fix.

Download the

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:

Download the 64 bit version: - Farbar Recovery Scan Tool Link

Warning: This script was written specifically for this system. Do not run this script on another system.

  • Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click on FRST.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  • Press the Fix button.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally.
  • When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Alright I was able to run that and it looks like everything was successful. I couldn't find any errors in the log.

Please try to install the Windows Backup Feature, if it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.

Unfortunately, I still cannot install the feature. I still get an error with code 0x800f081f and it complaining about the source files. The source image I am using is the one that this server was installed with so I'm not sure why it wouldn't find it.

I also tried installing it from PowerShell both with and without a source and both attempts failed. I will attach a screenshot of that as well.

Hi,

Have you already rebooted the server, if not please do so and try again to install the backup feature. If it fails again attach a new copy of the CBS logs after running DISM.

Run the following DISM command and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

I did reboot the server yesterday before I attempted to install the feature again. The FRST fix did not request it, but I did it for good measure. I will the feature again and run DISM.

Let me know the result and attach the latest CBS logs when it fails.

I used Server Manager to attempt the feature add. I provided the same source as before. The error stated the source files could not be found.

After the failure I ran the DISM command.

I am attaching screenshots and the requested log files.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Afterwards reboot the server and attempt to install the backup feature. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.

I ran the fix and rebooted the server. I rebooted the server and tried the install from Server Manager and it failed again. The error message is the same so I am including the CBS logs.

Could you please perform the first step in post #16 again, attach only SFCFix.txt as result and don't try anything else.
