Many updates will not install on a Win 7 system

I'm afraid not. My PC is a Dell so all that I have is the Dell recovery partition, the Dell reinstallation DVD and a Win 7 64-bit Repair Disk that I made when I first received the PC. As far as I know, all I can do is a factory reset of the OS, which would wipe all my data and programs - I believe that it would be impossible to do a repair reinstall. I could, of course, back up personal files, photos etc but I would have to reinstall 6 years worth of downloaded programs and, just as importantly, all the tweaks etc that I have made over the years. To be honest I would only consider doing this in extremis.
Dell did supply the MS OS discs when I bought my old XP PC, but they refused point blank to do so when I bought my Win 7 PC. With hindsight I should have abandoned Dell and bought my PC from a firm that would supply the retail OS discs.
I assume that you would be looking to recover uncorrupted files from the installation media. Of course, if you could actually use the Dell recovery discs and know what to look for, let me know and I'll see if I can find anything useful in them.

Sadly it isn't that simple. The issue here aren't corrupt files, but your Components Hive. I should have noticed before, but your Components Hive is way too small. There's way less keys in it than a normal one. By comparison, here's my my Windows 7 SP1 x64 VM (2-3 months late on Windows Updates) hive (notice the size of the scrolling cursor).
And here's yours.
Notice the difference? In my opinion, your Components Hive is corrupt, and there's no way to fix that much corruption (hundreds of missing keys, unknown ones on top of that) like that, hence why in those cases, we suggest a Repair Install.
The only thing we can do is try to see if you have a recent backup of the hive, load it, and see if it's more complete then your current one.

- On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
- On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);

The earliest shadow copy available is from March 16th and you started your thread on March 4th... In my opinion, the hive was already corrupt back then, so if we don't have access to a copy prior to March 4th, there's nothing really we can do.

No, I was never supplied with a retail copy of Win 7. Dell have refused to supply a retail copy of the OS for many years.
What I have is an OEM version of Win 7 which was supplied installed by Dell on the PC. On the C Drive of the PC there is a recovery partition and I have a so-called Dell "Reinstallation DVD" together with something called a Repair Disk which I burnt with some Dell software years ago. However, the problem is that, as far as I am aware, all that you can do with any of these is a factory reset which would take the PC back to the state in which I first received it. This means that all of my data, installed programs and updates will be deleted. I could, of course, first save the personal data but there is nothing I could do about the programs except reinstall every single one and, probably even more complicated, configure them to be as I now have them. We are talking serious, and I mean serious, hassle here.
As the factory reset method, rather than supplying a proper retail OS disk, seems to be increasingly common with OEMs nowadays it means that the default solution of a repair reinstall is, unfortunately, no use to many of us. Of course if anyone can suggest a way of using my OEM version of the OS to carry out a repair then I'm all ears, but I've never seen even the faintest suggestion of being able to do this.
As I have a perfectly legal MS COA I suppose I can see if I can beg, borrow or steal a retail OS disk but I don't know anyone who has one. I also think that I possibly may have somewhere a legit HeiDoc ISO of the OS, the one MS pulled the plug on a year ago.

Your only hope sadly to do a Repair Install of Windows 7 in that case is indeed to get your end on a Windows 7 installation media matching your install, and/or an .iso and create the media that way.
Otherwise, it'll be like you said, a Factory Reset which will return the system to factory settings, effectively removing your files, programs and settings.
Sadly, since the public Windows 7 .iso were pulled by Microsoft from Digital River Content, and these are now only accessible for users having product keys from a retail version of Windows 7, legally speaking, we aren't allowed to provide them, nor share them. It's a serious hassle for the user who's stuck in a situation where a Repair Install IS the only viable solution, but I guess it won't change Microsoft's position on this.

It's a serious hassle for the user who's stuck in a situation where a Repair Install IS the only viable solution, but I guess it won't change Microsoft's position on this.
So, it looks like I'll just have to live with some updates not not working. Two last ditch possibilities that occur to me are:
1) Upgrade to Win 10; I keep being told that my installed programs will survive the upgrade. However, as one of the failed Windows updates seems to be for preparing for the Win 10 update I strongly suspect that it wouldn't work.
2) And this is really scraping the bottom of the barrel. I didn't mention, because I didn't wish to complicate an already complicated situation, but I do have an old system image dating back to 2014. I've never tried it because I'm not sure whether there would be any great advantage over a clean install. However, a few weeks ago How To Geek described a method of extracting individual files from a system image. Assuming that it even worked, would there be any point in, say, attempting to recover a 2 year-old COMPONENTS file (or any other file, come to that)?

You don't need a "clean" system (system file related) to upgrade to Windows 10. We have many users here that upgraded to Windows 10 to "fix" all their Windows Update and system files related issue, and it worked quite well.
That COMPONENTS Hive will be 2 years old, which means, 2 years behind in updates and therefore like your current one, incomplete. So we would trade an incomplete hive for another one.
