Missing Manifest Files

First off, the Forum Posting Instructions have dead links so sorry if I'm posting wrong.
#2 the "main" issue I'm having right now is with my router apparently not providing DHCP to my PC all of sudden (just my Windows 7 installation) and Windows diagnostics isn't helping me.
#3 the installation I am currently working with was recovered from a dying hard drive that was over 10 years old and so has LOTS of little issues here built up here and there. I am avoiding a repair install at this time because I know it counts as an upgrade and therefore disables sysprep, not to mention you aren't guaranteed to keep you drivers (which would make this particular system unbootable because Win7 does NOT have drivers for it), and of course it resets a bunch of things, including updates which is a problem when you're more of a Group B user.

For now, I just want to get a clean SFC response. Does anyone have these files for me?

I just checked but they all seem to work. Which ones didn't work for you ?

For now, I just want to get a clean SFC response. Does anyone have these files for me?

I had posted in the Windows 7 forum and all the links in that thread bring me to "Oops! We couldn't find the requested page."

I repaired the dead links in the first post.

There isn't much more to be seen in the log.
There are also 10 missing payload files listed.
Lets fix the missing manifest files first.

  • Download

    SFCFix and move the executable to your desktop.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.

Sorry for the delay, someone touched the PC when I was doing this and I ended up with a corrupt user profile. I wasn't sure exactly what they had done so I went through the trouble of restoring a backup and restarting my fixing steps from scratch.
I get the impression I may end up with a corrupt user profile again though based on the symptoms I get just restoring this backup. When I login, I get a message the same message you get when you touch msconfig and it says it can only apply the changes after a restart. Additionally, my AV complains that it can't start. All of this probably boils down to something that's gone wrong with permissions, maybe from me trying to touch things from another Windows installation.
Looks to me like this is just copying files from the zip to the manifest folder? I could've done that myself without the exe...
Do we move on to running SFC/SUR now?

Yes. Lets start with SURT first.

Start the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) again.
On completion, attach the logfile C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log to your next reply.
 
Can you confirm what is the correct means of acquiring and running it? The link in the SURT topic here links to a 413KB exe, yet says the x64 package should be about 500MB. But on the Microsoft Catalog, the x64 package is closer to 1GB (though I see the tiny exe also listed there. I assume if I only run the exe, I will be missing components and as I've mentioned before, the system does not have internet access to download them on its own)

The single file KB947821 v34 is about 550MB in size.
Follow the instructions below to run a scan with the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) and provide a log.
  1. Download SURT for your system. (Windows 7 SP1 x64)
  2. Once downloaded, execute the installer, and go through the installation (this process can take around 15-20 minutes).
  3. On completion, a log will be created in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log.
  4. Attach this log to your next reply.
Alternatively, if these instructions are unclear for you, you can follow the tutorial below.

It spits out error 0x80080005 Server Execution Failed and doesn't update the CheckSUR.log nor create a new one.
Like I said, this system does not have internet access.
Since this is an .msu, I'd wager it can be installed from an offline Windows installation... It's probably the entire reason they made it an msu.
 
Are you able to download the KB947821 file with another machine and transfer the downloaded file to this particular machine ?
 
I did.
Running it yields the aforementioned error.
Where do you think I got the error?!
I can't browse to this thread on that machine because it has no internet. Do you think I copied the link you posted, transferred it to a USB stick and then opened it on the machine with no internet?!
It's a Windows error, not a browser download/internet error.
 
Lets have a look with another tool.

FRST Scan:
  1. Download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:
    64-bit: Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
    Note: Your antivirus program may report FRST incorrectly as an infection. If so, disable the real-time protection when downloading and running FRST.
  2. Right-click to run the tool as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  3. Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  4. Press the Scan button.
  5. Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST64.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  6. Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.
 
I hope these unnecessarily broad unencrypted scan files aren't accessible by anyone with an account in this public forum.
They contain far more unobfuscated plain text information than necessary. Hell not even the account names are given the basic decency of being scrambled, not to mention the far more important information that can show up in the browser lookups.

Without these logfiles we cannot provide help as we cannot see your machine. The only private information in these logs will be the Windows username or usernames.
Nothing to worry about.
If you wish I can remove the logfiles from your post.

Lets start fixing.
You have multiple anti-virus programs installed which is not good. They can negatively affect each other and/or slow down your computer.

Uninstall the following programs:
- Java(TM) 6 Update 26
- Kaspersky Total Security
- Visual Studio 2008 x64 Redistributables
Restart the machine.

Let me know the result before we continue.
 
These logfiles are posted by other users when as well as they need assistance to remove infections or having other problems.
That doesn't make it okay.
The only private information in these logs will be the Windows username or usernames.
It contains no PERSONAL information, but what devices and programs you use is absolutely private information. It even prints out the tasks you have, your extensions, AND YOUR BROWSER HOMEPAGE!
It's practically a goldmine for malicious users to know what vulnerabilities you may have on your system. Hell it even spits out your Firewall rules lmao
It also spits out all your volume labels. Better hope those don't have anymore personal information like your usernames probably do.
This is NOT good practice.
I understand the need to analyze the system. There's just a lot more in there than necessary, and many details could be obfuscated without changing the result. I'm SURE you don't need to know my Firefox homepage.

If you no longer need those files, I would appreciate it if you removed them.

I don't see Java 6 in my installed programs.
When I try to uninstall Visual Studio 2008 x64 Redistributables it says: "Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified file location exists and is writable."
It's the same for Kaspersky, plus a message about a feature requiring a network resource that isn't available.
CCleaner doesn't seem to run at all, whether I use a portable version on an external drive or try to install it again.
 
As I told you earlier this tool is used to detect/remove infections. They can be on several locations on a machine, files, folders, tasks, home-pages etc. The information in the logs is to present a most complete picture.
I do understand your concerns and removed your attachments.
I disagree its a goldmine for malicious users. You have BitTorrent installed which might be a bigger security issue but that is another discussion.

Are you able to run Malwarebytes which is already installed ?
If so, provide a scanreport.
 
There is nothing inherently insecure about BitTorrent, only what you are torrenting and from who. It's no more dangerous than downloading any other file on the net. It does not boot with the system and I rarely use it. I did just recently use it to acquire a hash-perfect copy of Windows 7 since Microsoft has stopped distributing it. The torrent was acquired/distributed by the Wayback Machine/web archive.

Malwarebytes does not run. I assure you the issue here is not mere Malware.
Not that the issue is relevant, but I can tell you the history of the device that got it into this state if you want.
It was a dying drive nearing 15 years old with nearly 400 000 read errors, over a thousand reallocated sectors, over 3 years of power-on time, 480 uncorrectable sectors, etc.
GNU ddrescue was left to run over 100 retry passes for days to try and recover all the data on the disk. Obviously I didn't manage to get everything. I think it came out to about 1MB of sectors I couldn't recover, no doubt spread out across essential Windows files.
It's also possible I caused some corruption doing some RAM tuning but I'm PRETTY sure I didn't since I was always booting from external drives for that.
Malware is the least of the concerns in this case. The only one who hurts my computer is me.
If you really want me to scan it, I could probably do so from another installation but I don't have Malwarebytes or Kaspersky installed on my other installations. I do have a Kaspersky boot disk though.
I did run SFC which managed to complete this time, though of course it said some things couldn't be repaired.
