Yes, the previous drive developed bad sectors and has been replaced. That's probably why I had so much damage to the SXS stuff. It probably affected the safe boot code also. I did disk restore on the new drive and I'm sure the corruption followed along, because it was only my backup software that indicated that the disk was experiencing read errors. Interestingly enough, I got no pop-up notifications from Windows. I found the old drive had been erroring for a while only by reviewing the Windows system log via system management > event viewer. I have since added a popup notification task for disk error events.
