Remove Update Manually
  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt.
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, then press enter.

  4. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.

FRST Registry Search
  1. Click your Start button and choose Control Panel.
  2. In the upper right corner ensure the View by: is set to Category.
  3. Select the Programs group.
  4. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link. This will bring up the Server Manager dialog.
Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep this dialog open while you perform the remaining steps. You can minimize it if you wish but keep it open.
  5. Right-click on the file FRST64.exe and choose Run as administrator.
  6. Copy and paste KB2656356 into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
  7. When the scan is complete, a message will display that 'SearchReg.txt' is saved in the same folder FRST was started from. Notepad will open this file also. Close Notepad and attach the file 'SearchReg.txt' to your next reply.
  8. You may close any remaining open windows now.

  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2:

sorry for the delay - I did as instructed but the update failed and rolled back again. Interestingly - Windows Update window now shows KB4499406, KB4499164, KB2813347, and KB890830 as available. The second one is the 2019-05 Security Monthly Rollup for Windows 7 x64

Do you think the problem is related to the SHA2 authentication that is now required to install updates on Win 7? I'm not sure whether that patch ever got applied to this system.

Try to install KB890830 only and report the result.

Try to install KB2813347 only and report the result.

Good. What is the oldest available update now ?

Both are from yesterday - the KB4499406 is a security and quality rollup for dot net KB4499164 is the security quality rollup for win 7 x64 systems

KB4489878 isn't listed anymore ?

Try to install KB4499164 only and report the result.

KB4499164 fails at reboot stage when it says configuring windows updates - it fails saying "Failure Configuring Windows Updates Reverting Changes" It then reboots and there is a second episode of Configuring/Failing Windows Updates but after the second reboot it goes to the logon screen. So this morning Windows Update is offering
2019-05 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2, 4.7, 4.7.1, 4.7.2, 4.8 for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB4499406) and
2019-05 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4499164)

Should we be trying to install in a clean boot mode or in safe mode or under the Adminstrator account? I'm just throwing thoughts out there ...

Thank you for your enormous patience in troubleshooting this mess!

OK - Clean boot - KB4499164 fails as before BUT KB4499406 (S&Q Rollup for dotNET)succeeded. I doublechecked and this pc is running the latest BIOS for an Asus z97M Plus motherboard. Buildwise it is identical to the other Z97 M Plus I have except this on has an i5 4690K and the other an i7, and this one has the weather recording software on it that the other does not. the i& machine is updating normally. Windows Update now only shows KB4499164 as available important update.
