[SOLVED] Problem with SFC and Windows Update

OK, let's do the following. Let me know when complete.

Replace Components Hive
1. Download componentsnew.zip to your desktop.
2. Right-click on componentsnew.zip and select Extract All...
3. Ensure "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click the Extract button.
4. The componentsnew folder will open and you will see the components file inside it.
5. Right-click on the components file and select copy.
6. Open Registry Backup and Restore (regback) again.
7. Right-click on the most recent backup and select Explore Backup...
8. This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see an existing file named COMPONENTS.
9. Right-click in a blank area of this window and select paste. You will be prompted that "There is already a file with the same name in this location". Click Copy and Replace.
10. You may receive another dialog asking for confirmation. Click the Continue button if you do.
11. You may close this window now. It will bring you back to the Regsitry Backup and Restore window showing your backups.
12. Ensure that the most recent backup is still selected and click the Restore... button.
13. Click the Advanced Options link at the bottom of the screen.
14. Change the Restoration Mode to Copy Files. You will receive a warning about changing this setting. Answer Yes to continue.
15. Click the OK button on this screen.
16. Click the Start button. You will be prompted asking if you are sure. Answer Yes.
17. Once complete you will see it say Finished. Then you can click the Cancel button on the Registry Restore screen.
18. Close any remaining open windows and programs and reboot the machine.

I'm getting failure messages. backup hive failed, restoring components file failed. "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process." Perhaps I did something improperly.

I tried it again. It appears to have succeeded and prompted me to reboot. I hope I did it correctly.

Good! Now do the following so I can see what other corruption we may have. This will also tell me if you did it correctly. Thanks.

SFC Scan
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
sfc /scannow

3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"

4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

That's was expected. OK, I need a current copy of your components hive.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Thanks. This proves you did the previous steps properly. We're past the 1st corruption but I see several more. The type of corruption I'm seeing normally means you have a hardware issue. The likely culprit would be bad RAM. But it could be the hard drive or even motherboard. Did you change or add any RAM recently?

What I would like to have you do is a Memory test. You will need to close everything you are working on and you won't be able to use your machine until the test is done.

1. Click your start button and type memory.
2. Windows Memory Diagnostic will come up in the search results. Please click this.
3. Select Restart now and check for problems (recommended).
4. Let me know when this is complete and especially if you see any errors.
5. We'll check the log afterwards.

The memory test seems to be OK.

I installed a new SSD in my computer about 6 weeks ago. I had been out of town while having some renovations done. I suspect that the people who did the renovations handled the computer roughly, because I was unable to clone the old system hard drive and later discovered it had some bad sectors. (I removed it from the computer.) I did a fresh install of Windows 10 on the SSD but encountered problems. It is not inconceivable that there is a problem with the motherboard or the second hard drive. I would be surprised if the SSD if bad.

Thanks for the info. Let's try to clean up what I can see then.

I knew it couldn't be that easy. OK, let's do the following. Let me know when complete. Please follow the steps exactly. It may also help to delete any zip files we have been working with off your desktop to avoid any confusion.

Replace Components Hive
1. Download componentsnew2.zip to your desktop.
2. Right-click on componentsnew2.zip and select Extract All...
3. Ensure "Show extracted files when complete" is checked and click the Extract button.
4. The componentsnew2 folder will open and you will see the components file inside it.

At Step 8, there was no components file. There were some error messages later on. I continued, then rebooted.

So did it seem like it replaced the file? Let's do the following.

SFC Scan

I'm not sure if it replaced the components file. SFC gave its usual failure message: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

Unfortunately it looks like the original corrupted file was put back so it didn't work. Let's try the following instead.

1. Reboot your machine.
2. See if you can delete C:\Windows\System32\Config\COMPONENTS
3. If you can, then take the most recent COMPONENTS file from the previous post and simply copy/paste it into this location.
4. Let me know if you are able to do this.

Excellent. Let's try the following again.

SFC Scan

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

failed again (same message as post #36).

Something strange, though. I had neglected to delete the previous cbs.txt and cbs.zip that was on the desktop. When SFC completed and I applied the second command to copy the log to the desktop, it gave me the option to overwrite the previous cbs.txt file. I entered "Yes" the "enter." But when I checked the property dialog for the file, the time was 3 hours ago. So I deleted the file from the desktop and entered the command again. Don't know if it means anything.
