[SOLVED] Server 2016 updates not working

I will try. When I went to check for updates looks like it installed and is asking to restart. I have to restart server when I get a chance, it maybe late tonight.

Just wanted to keep you updated. I haven't been able to reboot the server yet. I may not get a chance to reboot until 7/16, which would be a normal scheduled reboot. Will keep you posted if I get a chance before hand. Appreciate the support.

Thanks for the update, and no problem at all I will see the result when you are able to reboot.

well, I was able to do a restart. The server was taking a long time so I had to hard power cycle it. When it came back up it said it failed update. I manually ran kb5039214 and it showed it installed asking for restart. I restarted normally but when it came back up and I looked it still says update failed. Here is the cbs logs.

Hi,

It is not recommended to perform forced reboots, this may cause other issues which makes it more difficult to resolve things.

Export SBS (SideBySide) hive
  • Click on the Start button and type regedit
  • When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  • When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.
    Code:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide
  • Once selected, click File > Export....
  • Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*).

  • Name this file SideBySide (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click on the saved file and choose Send > Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  • Attach the .ZIP file to your next post.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Hi,

Here's the next fix.

Warning: This fix was written specifically for this system. Do not run this fix on another system.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Afterwards reboot the server attempt to update. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.

I applied latest fix but haven't had a chance to reboot server. It's scheduled for a reboot 7/16 but will try and do it before then.

Okay, please provide the result (SFCFix.txt) to see if the fix completed succesfully.

Thanks, let's see the result after the reboot. But I do not recommend any forced reboots if the update seems to hang!

So please schedule a maintaince window to keep the server offline for a longer time to see when the update fails after the reboot and/or when it results in an automatic rollback!

Ok, so we had some storms come through over the weekend and server restarted. Strange when I go to update history the failed update now shows installed successfully on 7/5. I did a manual check for updates and shows all the latest updates for July. I do have it scheduled to install updates tomorrow. We'll see if it is resolved.

That's hard to say if we don't know which updates - and how they are scheduled? KB5039214 only or also other updates? But since KB5039214 is marked as installed succesfully I think it should be fine, but maybe some .NET Framework are still pending?

only ones showing look like current for July. I'm actually running the updates to see if they go without errors.

Yes, KB5039214 was the LCU from June and KB5040434 is the latest LCU so please install it as well as KB5040562 which is the associated SSU.

Well, it looks like we are all good on windows update now. Update history shows updates successful. Thank you for taking the time to resolve the issue. I'll donate to the site when I get paid this week.
